Hi fellow teachers! I'm a 4th grade teacher looking for some hand-on lessons. I am specifically looking for some cool activities relating to the layers of the earth's atmosphere. Any one have any ideas to share?
I like to think about real world applications of content when planning a lesson. Ask them to become space-age re-entry specialists. Start with NASA http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/search/Keyword/Atmosphere.html, then have students create own animations of layers.
I have the students remember the layers of the atmosphere in order with this device, "Take some money to everyone." I also have them complete a layered book (Dinah Zike Elementary School Science Foldable book) where they have to write the layers of the atmosphere in order and put facts and pictures of what they might find in each layer of the atmosphere. My students (also fourth grade) aren't required to know as much as the sixth graders I taught last year so it is scaled down quite a bit (for example they don't need to know how far each layer extends into the atmosphere).
