5th Grade State Fair Research...Tell Me About Your State
I'm a 5th grade teacher who is interested in revamping our social studies curriculum in which each student becomes an "expert" on one of the states. After various projects during the year, the study concludes with a State Fair during which the kids present display boards of traditional topics such as famous people, products, governor, etc. This year we want the kids to select a topic related to "their" state and do research and a display board presentation at the State Fair about that topic. For example: California might offer topics like The Golden Gate Bridge, redwood trees, the Border Patrol issue, the Gold Rush, or Ansel Adams and his work at Yosemite. I would like help in creating a list of possible topics for each state from which the students can each choose a topic that interests them. I would love a list of ideas from you about your state. Can't wait to see what you offer.

Arkansas is noted for having the only public diamond mine in the US (maybe the world). It is a public park called Crator of Diamond State Park. You can actually go right into the diamond field free of charge and look for diamonds. They will be happy to rent you tools of course. LOL. There is a website at http://www.craterofdiamondsstatepark.com/. We have been there several times. We never found a diamond but we collected a smal vial of beccia tuff (the soil you find diamonds in) as a souvenier. We have enjoyed the park and getting to visit the many rock shops in the local area.
It is called dthe Natural State for a good reason. We regularly have deer, fox, hawk, skunk, opossum, and more come through the yard and right up on to the porch for the smaller animals. Just yesterday I nearly stepped on a small rattlesnake(about 8 inches long) in our driveway. I was wearing my sandals, so I couldn't risk trying to step on it. But, I also didn't want to risk losing track of it and someone getting bit later. I kept hoping my husband would notice me out there. He did finally and when he found out what I was staring at he got a shovel and killed it. Yep, definitely the natural state.
