Local Native American history is a fairly common unit in grades 2-4. Some fellow 3rd grade teachers in different states (CT., GA. IL., and southern CA.) and in Canada thought it would be exciting for our students to share their learning with other classes around the country. One of the primary objectives would be to compare how the natural resources and climate of an area influenced local Native American lifestyle (food, clothing, and housing, etc.).

The collaboration will be done through a wiki: Native Culture Wiki. We are aiming for late Nov/Dec, but if you cover the unit at another time that is fine.

If you cover Native Americans and are interested in participating or if you have any questions, please leave a comment. Thanks!

I am a 4th grade teacher and we do an extensive unit on American Indians in November and December. I am actually thinking of starting it earlier this year, perhaps closer to the end of October. I would love to collaborate with you. The students create a variety of individual types of projects and do presentations of these to the class.
We are located in Pennsylvania.
Thanks!
Sally,
It would be great to have you join the project! If you visit the wiki and request access, I'll add you as a member so you can add and edit when you are ready. Do your students focus on the Native Americans of Pennsylvania, or the country as a whole?
Jonah
They focus on the country as a whole. We examine the way in which the environment impacts the culture and also look at the impact of colonialism on American Indians. Each student examines a different nation in depth.
