To help students understand propaganda techniques, I use the super bowl ads from the past to teach bandwagon, testimonial, statistics, glittering generalities, and appeal to emotion. Then while watching the current Super Bowl students track the commercials with their families and fill in a chart for the type of technique used. Lots of fun for all. Students start asking in January each year if we are going to do that again.

I have some web sites with old magazine and newspaper ads. The students cut and pasted (on a PowerPoint slide) from these sites and made a collage on one propaganda technique. They then wrote an explanation on how this techniquewere used in the ad. I displayed the good ones in my classroom. Here's the links:
