Steinbeck and "The American Dream"

What tips do you have for teaching the concept of "The American Dream" in Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men or The Grapes of Wrath?  We use "The American Dream" as a theme during the ninth grade year and would like to integrate concepts from the academy with the novels I am teaching.
