Our district just moved to Google Apps.  Looking at my current documents, a lot of it can be converted to a google doc (they don't use any of the more robust features of office).  The others I can just send to google doc as is and use it as a storage.  I am looking forward to version control, accessibility and collaboration/sharing.

One thing that concerns me is backup.  I'm used to having multiple backups of my docs.  I see under more actions I can export all my google docs (2GB at a time) out of google docs to a local computer.  However it asks to convert the files for exporting.  If I convert my google docs to a open office or microsoft file, does it then mess with the formatting?  Has anyone tried to export all their files and then reload them into google docs?   Did it work ok?

My second concern is connectivity.  How often or problematic is connectivity to google docs?  I'm rather confident in my connection to internet, I'm concerned about things going down on google's end.

Your help in calming my nervousness is appreciated!

I can address the formatting issue: The new version of google docs maintains formatting very well when exporting to word, and it imports back in as it was before. I've been doing this all summer moving from my personal google docs to my apps account.

The only issue I've had is with table of contents and occasionally image placement, but this is easy to fix.
Congrats! Google Apps makes collaboration so much easier.

I've done a bulk download and upload, and as long as I didn't edit the files in a different office suite before the upload, everything remained faithful. The only time I've ever had a problem was going from MS Office (especially PowerPoint) to Google docs, but I never do anymore. I do all of my document creation inside Google Docs and download from there as a backup.

As far as connectivity goes, I've never had an issue on Google's end. I've been using Docs on my home PC for years now, and I've never had an issue. I maintain a backup just in case (local and Dropbox) but so far so good.
