What are some ways teachers are using Google Docs with grades 4-5? I use it often for students to work on websites on certain topics of research, essays and other odds and ends. Anything great ideas out there? :-)
Maria, you are right. It works if groups are made within contacts (what anyone else would call a distribution list). However Google has another Group which is more of a discussion group. If you share with that group name it will not automatically appear in the members docs list.
Roger,
I am pretty sure when you create the group from within the Contact Picker, and use that group to share, it shows up in the students' docs home page. At least, it did yesterday. It works the way you described when you create the group from within the "Contact" tab. Interestingly enough, I can ADD contacts to the group from the group created in the "Contact Picker" from the Contacts tab. You are right, it needs more work on Google's end.
Thanks, Chris. I tried that, but the groups that I have created under the "Contacts" tab, show up when I click on "Choose From Contacts", but they don't have any students in them. The folder is empty. I think I figured out that I have to create the groups under "Choose From Contacts". Not sure why, but that seems to work.
In response to the question about sharing a Google doc with a group made in contacts: When you choose share it opens a box. Where it says "Add People" click on "Choose From Contacts." In the new box that opens there is a search field near the top. Right under it there is a pull down menu that will have a list of your contact groups. You can then select individuals from the group or there is an "All" option to select the whole group at once.
