Hi Denise,

1. Teachers can see an assignment being created and comment on it before it is "handed in"
2. Students have same software at home as school - so always have access to their work
3. Nothing is ever lost
4. Assignments can be keep for at-risk students to see if they are making progress (our grade 7s keep there logins all the way to grade 12 and have their English assignments saved with teacher comments and marks for future review)
5. Teachers can use their Blackberries or I Phones to access students assignments or any document. Teachers become much more efficient.
6. Saves money - less photocopying
7. Teacher Assignments and resources are search-able on-line. Both parents and students can access course resourses.
8. Good for the environment - less paper
9. Saves teachers and students time

I am now an instructional coach for teachers of ELLs. I think using google writing tools might liven up the writing process for students, but I am not sure about how to go about praising the wonders of google to teachers who feel that these kids just need grammar and vocabulary all day and little else. Google offers options that will give a purpose for writing and reading. Any ideas on how I can "sell" this product to my teachers?

Thanks.

Denise

Rachelle,
Reader is part of the consumer google account product, not part of apps for education. Google is in the middle of converting apps accounts so they can use reader and other services see this link http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/static.py?hl=en&page...

But the transition is not expected to be completed until late Fall. At this point some google apps domains have access to all google services as part of their trusted tester program, but the consumer tools do not yet have the same level of admin control as the existing tools. For example an administrator can't set picassa or blogger so that it is limited to the domain, or turn to tool on/off by group.

I am a middle school librarian. I'd like our students to be able to create igoogle homepages - including google readers and apps, but they are too young to create gmail accounts and don't all have email. Any suggestions?

have organized a weather project for the 2010-2011 school year. It is geared to second grade, but anyone is welcome. It is all on a goggle doc spreadsheet. We are recording the high temperature, low temperature, and weather conditions daily. Each location will have a tab in the spreadsheet. If you are interested in joining us, please email me pattylangley@johnston.k12.nc.us . You can check out our spreadsheet at johnston.k12.nc.us/pattylangley under the Weather Project link in the left.

Hi Gerald,

Yes we have students collaborating in real time on docs frequently. It is really quite amazing to witness as the students eat it up and participation is dramatically improved. Connection speeds can definitely be a problem. We are fortunate to have significant bandwidth, but once we turned on Google this year we ended up needing to purchase more. Certainly something to consider as your bandwidth usage may easily double after switching on Google Apps.
