K-8 Computer Lab Teachers

I started a discussion inviting anyone to share resources and ideas about running a computer lab. I am not sure I am doing this right but we will see.

@KELLY have you looked at tweakxp or tweakvista? I think you would have some good luck with those if they are still available. Can do some locking down of some securities. Also you could work with the policies with the xp and vista machines.

HI all. I have been teaching in the lab for about 9 years now. I have 20 years experience in the classroom that has helped me tremendously help support what goes on the classroom as well. I am looking forward to finding ways to incorporate more into my classes. Glad to be a part of the group.

Kelly,
I don't know of any way to lock down a background, but suggest that allowing students to change the background image is a nice way to let them get familiar with the computers. They can go online and perhaps find pictures of people they are studying in history and putting the pictures on the desktop. They can then be changed when studies change.

Hello, this is my first year as a computer teacher. I have just changed careers from 20 years in the IT field. I just finished a unit doing Limericks using voicethread. I'm having a lot of fun at my small school K-8, but I'm always looking for ideas. Does anyone know how I can lock down the desktop background? I have 30 machines. 15 XP and 15 vista.

One of the best position in my years as an educator was as a computer lab teacher in a Primary K-2 school. Had those little one entering data in spreadsheeets, making power points, email to correspondents in Israel, and much more. Retired now, but you can see some of what I did on http://www.educationalsynthesis.org ... take a look at "My Own Books", Famous Americans, Lessons, and Zman in particular.

This is my third year of teaching computers at a small school with 'not state-of-the-art equipment, but lots of enthusiasm. Looking forward to sharing ideas and experiences.

I do live video podcast beginning 11.01.2008. I want to make the Internet a safe place for the Child in all of us. If the first time you experience the Internet is at 4 years old on your parents lap experiencing the spirit of giving with Santa for all the right reasons rather than @ 13 for all the wrong reasons our world is going to be a much safer place for many years to come.

Anything I can do to help this cause please let me know.

Hello All! I have been a computer teacher for 8 years and for all of those 8 years I have had a partner teacher. However, she up and retired on me and now I am on my own. I was happy to find this group as I am now looking for people who share my experiences. We are currently updating our lab of 25 computers with will have state of the art machines but will run Windows XP. Not ready to go to Vista yet! I am looking forward to sharing ideas!

Hi everyone. I've been a computer teacher for 17 years. I currently have a lab of 30 XP computers all networked. I see each homeroom once every other week and have open lab for teachers to bring classes. I'm happy to share my experiences as well as learn some new things!
