Comment by Amanda Jaqua on October 13, 2009 at 3:12pm: As you know, that will depend upon each child and each teacher's classroom management style. In my class we have both individual and whole class behavior plans. The individual plan is based on the concept of 1,2,3 magic. When using this model, a child is given a warning when a poor choice is made. If child makes a poor choice again, they will be counted to 1. If the behavior continues they are counted till they get to 3. When a child gets to 3, they receive a five minute time out and a yellow card. If immediate reinforcement is needed I give the time out right away. Otherwise, the child will take a time out at recess. For severe behaviors, such as physically harming another student, I go straight to the yellow card. If a second series of poor choices is made in the same day, the child will have a red card. If I can't reach the child with these steps, its time for administrative intervention. The second aspect of my behavior management plan is a whole class goal and reward system. We have a treasure bowl that I put small fish bowl jewels in to reward good choices. If all the students are working quietly or were respectful in an assembly for example, I will put treasures in the bowl. When the bowl is full we vote on a reward. It may be, parachute PE, hot chocolate on a cold day or something else simple and special. Also on days where the whole class gets a green card everyone puts one treasure in the bowl. I love my students and can be e really fun teacher. However, they need to earn the fun. It’s ok to start out as Miss Viola Swamp and then let Miss Nelson come out once the children are trained and ready.
