I need a propeller head stat! Okay, the rundown is as follows:
1 G3 b&w 300mhz computer
1 G3 b&w 400 mhz computer

Okay, the 400 won't load OS X 10.3.5, partway through the install it shuts itself down (but not completely, just whirs away, saying goodbye) it runs 9.2 fine.

The 300 has worked fine with an upgrade to OS X 10.3.9

Being too smart for my own good (overly curious monkey syndrome) I decided to put the 400mhz cpu into the 300 mhz computer. It ran but didn't recognize the 400, but ran it at 300 instead. Now, when I switched the cpu's back the 300 can't find it's hard drive! Bad, Bad, Bad. Any advice? I'm thinking about switching the hard drives and booting up the 400 to see if it recognizes it...

Sounds like you are having fun with these two machines. :)

I haven't played with these two models in particular, but a likely reason that the 400 mhz chip didn't run faster on the (former 300 mhz) motherboard was that that particular motherboard was configured to run at a particular clock speed by its jumper configuration. I did a quick search and found this helpful article that gives you the jumper configuration you need.

As for the hard drive problem...nine out of ten times a case like this is likely that you may have accidentally nudged the HD connector cable. If you haven't tried this already I would try unplugging both ends of the Hard Drive cable (at the mother board and at the hard drive) plugging them back in and see if it recognizes the drive.

Glad to see I'm not alone in cruising LEM! Thanks for the help. I checked the connection and even swapped the hard drives in the machines. I'm coming to terms with the idea that the hard drive is dead.
If it can run 9.2 or Classic that means that the hardware is ok. It is probably the RAM that is giving check how much RAM you have on the system and the minimum requirement for OSX 10.3.9
Have you tried starting up while holding down the option key? If so, and nothing shows up on the blue screen then I would recommend restarting the machine with the OSX install disc and perform a disc repair. If no disc shows up then go back and recheck all of the connections on the logic board and the ribbon cable to the hard drive. Don't forget to check the battery for at least 3.5 volts
