Just found a new free website for community building with students called www.edmodo.com - very cool! Students must have access code to join so it's safe. Allows teachers to create polls, assign homework, or even keep grades. So far, 14 students have joined my group & it's only Day 3!!

Back to Math after a few years teaching Science--looking forward to integrating technology, and also doing more reading and writing in the classroom. I am currently in the Northern Virginia Writing Project Summer Institute--what a fantastic program.

Joanne, look at the list of the past and upcoming Math 2.0 Interest Group meetings with leaders of online math communities. Many of the communities, like last week's IntMath, are for students, and many, like Living Math, for family educators. Here is the June event preview I just sent out:

June 5th, 2010, 2pm ET. Host: Julie Harland, Mathematics Professor at MiraCosta College and creator of hundreds of math videos at YourMathGal.com
You can ask Julie questions about her projects, as well as using screencasts in your work and online education in general.

June 9th, 2010, 9:30pm ET. Host: Peter Gray, Professor of Psychology at Boston College, blogging at Psychology Today's Freedom to Learn. Peter will talk about his blog, and in particular two widely resonating posts about mathematics: the Benezet experiment, and a family learning philosophy called "unschooling." You can also ask Peter questions about his research of Sudbury schools.

June 19th, 2010, 2pm ET. Host: Kalid Azad, creator of InstaCalc, and blogger at BetterExplained. We will talk about the meaning of math insights ("a-ha moments") and interactive ways of sharing them online. People interested in the development of lightweight, embeddable math widgets can also ask questions about InstaCalc.

June 26th, 2010. Host: Ryan Goble, teacher mentor at South Bronx, graduate student at Columbia University, and creator of Making Curriculum Pop - a resource-sharing community for educators interested in better practices and teaching with pop culture. Ask Ryan about building educator communities, online learning, and using culture at large as the classroom.

I had a couple of concerned parents who were looking at helping their kids stay in touch with their math learning. While I advised them on summer camps which help kids enhance their reading and math skills - was wondering if they were some good and proven online math programs which could be recommended?

While I know there are many such programs but something which is proven, tried tested would be a safer bet.

We at CEET are hosting a week long, online event for math teachers and other interested educators. This will follow Steve H's "unconference" model and will respond to the interests and goals of the participants. The aim is to provide a forum through a math moodle for us to connect, share, and collaborate.

If you're interested, please join CEET and then become a member of the Math 2.0 group there. On that group page you'll find the registration link and you can add yourself to the wiki. The information you give us on the wiki Meet & Greet page will help us create a group of starter topics for the week.

I hope to see lots of new faces in CEET and add you to my list of colleagues there.

I'm a math teacher in Surrey, BC, and the moderator of the Math 2.0 group in CEET. We're offering a week long open course (sharing of ideas and resources on various topics) form Feb. 12-19.
