Every teacher wants their students to take action that makes a difference to and in the world. But how do we make this happen?
This year, Tosca Killoran, Adam Bourret and I launched a research project to look at how we can enable and empower our students in taking sustainable action; The peer reviewed paper was published on February 28, 2013 in the IB Journal of Teaching Practice
In continuing with this research, we developed an Action Phase Document, as well as a Children's book. The phase document was created because the authors believe that the concept of action is more a state of mind than a product. Action can only make a resonating difference to and in the world when it is developed in tandem with a toolbox of explicitly taught skills, modeled behaviors, scaffolded plans and a gradual release of responsibility.
This document contains a service-learning curriculum framework, which includes: strands, sub-strands, phases and online resources that complement the skills focused on at each stage of the learning journey towards sustained action.
It is available here: http://www.helptakeaction.com/action-phase-document.html
The children's book that we created is now available in Print version and will soon be available as an eBook. To learn more about "A is for Action: The ABC's of Taking Action", check out: http://www.ed-ucation.ca/a-is-for-action-the-abcs-of-taking-action....
Take a look and let me know what you think. I appreciate any feedback you can offer!
Hi All. I'm a 6th grade teacher in Elk Grove and executive director of Curiosity Films, a student inspired and teacher directed studio committed to empowering kids to use the medium of film to express their voices and showcase their learning. You can check out our project based learning projects and films at http://curiosityfilms.edublogs.org
We're always looking for new funding sources and opportunities to apply our filmmaking skills. Currently, I'm working on a Kickstarter proposal for the 2013-14 school year. We hope to create a feature length documentary on waste streams. So far, we've forged partnerships with our city's integrated waste division, our region's waste hauling service, and The World We Want Foundation to make this happen!
Hi All,
I wanted to invite you to a weekly event on twitter: PBLChat. It's like Educhat, but about issues specifically surrounding Project Based Learning. It lasts for an hour, and people go fast and furious talking about their practice, ideas, and feedback. It starts at 9 pm EST.
All you need to do is log on to twitter, then type in #pblchat to the search window to see the posts. Include #pblchat in your tweet to join the voices.
Each week is a different topic - tonight's theme is "Empowering Students with Digital Tools".
Join us this Tuesday, and every tuesday at 9 pm EST!

Hi,
I would love to use PBL. I teach technology in a K-8 school and have done 1 unit each with the students in grades 7 & 8 they got so much out of it that I want to try it with other grades.
