It is important the we develop common rubrics to assess student writing at each grade level. This will allow us to identify anchor pieces at for each level of the rubric. Then in our PLC meetings we can evaluate and reflect on student work.

Please look at the rubric and let us know what you think should be added, deleted, or revised.Post a comment that describes the changes you think should be made.

We will use your feedback to create a common rubric that all grade level teachers will use. The files are attached. Thanks in advance for you input.

I really like this rubric to assess writing. However, since we are using Writer's Workshop, maybe we can somehow incorporate some of the ideas from that into the rubric. For example, maybe add a part focusing on if or how the student is understanding the concept of a "Small Moment."
I've seen this rubric before and I think it's excellent.
Michelle shared this with me in the beginning of the year. I discussed it at back to school night so the parents would know what skills would be expected of their children in writing this year. I think it would be better if we modified it and made one for the beginning, the middle and the end of the year. They progress so much in writing in first grade.
I think the rubric is well thought out and helps students, teachers, and parents know what first grade writing expectations are. I do however, agree with Kristie that maybe there could be a different rubric for the beginning and middle of the year since there is so much growth with a first graders writing during that time. The rubric should grow with the students. This would give the students a chance to meet and or exceed the expectations with each new skill they learn.
I think that is a great idea (To have a modified rubric for different times in the year). As teams it would be beneficial to think about what you do during the year and create rubrics that define the progression of skills your students should achieve. Great PLC topic.
I love the idea of using a rubric. With a few changes, this one would be great to use with writer's workshop. Since we are trying to incorporate some of Trophies's writing into our program, I also like the use of their rubrics for specified pieces like friendly letters, invitations, etc... I have sent rubrics home with report cards in the past and I think it's a great way for parents to know what the grade level expectations are and where their child falls within those expectations.
