Hi. I was reading your post on using google docs. I am planning on starting a literature unit with my 7th grade students using google docs. Did you have each student create a gmail account? If not, what method did you use?
  • Anne Mirtschin

Hi Courtney. As yet, my students do not have individual accounts, but I am seriously considering doing so. The google docs were all in my name. The link to the google form was copied and pasted in a shared file on our school network server. Students copied the link and pasted it into an internet window tab, accessed it online, filled in the form and submitted it live. The results were shared between the teachers. The teacher in Florida just watched the results come in live.
I exported the raw spreadsheet results, (once all three schools had completed the forms) into excel back onto our shared folders (on school server). Students accessed them, saved them back in their folders, summarized the results, and charted them. They made a screen dump of the charts into MS Paint, converted to a jpg file and just uploaded the resultant image. I am about to try and embed the actual google data into my post.
I love using the google apps and would love to know how you get on. Google docs would be the easiest app to start with. If you want to share with someone our year 7 literacy teacher would love to work with someone. She is reasonably new to all this, but very enthausiastic and I could help her.

Thanks for your reply, Anne. Mostly, the kind of thing that I am looking for is subtle rules of conduct and behavior that take time to learn and is usually learned from sustained interaction with others. Unspoken rules of conduct.

Thanks for the welcome Anne. Between this and the comment challenge I will be really busy.

Thanks Anne. My twitter name is barbs1.

    Hi Anne,
Yeah I have solved all of my problems by switching to Firefox. I have also created a delicious account. I ha ve already introduced my students to it. However, I have not been able to have them use BOOLIFY as it relies on the Google search engine, which is blocked for students at our school.

Hi Anne (re: video): No need to worry! We were in a nasty automobile wreck and are dealing with that and in two weeks I leave for Europe, on top of end-of-school-year stuff! Our video is filmed; now we just need to render it and record voices. Isn't it fun this time of year? ;-)

I read an article over at the edublogger: "Here’s My First Five Tips For Writing Better Blog Posts — What Are.... She mentions that we should comment on my readers post. Which I haven't and after reading her personal rant I am rather embarrassed about.

I thank you very much for 1. Reading and 2. Commenting on my blog. It's nice to know that some one else is reading my hastily written gunk and finding it interesting enough to comment on. I do sincerely appreciate it.

I'm happy that CR 2.0 is connecting so many of us across the world. I kind of feel like we're on the fringe right now, but we can really help change the world from a social point of view. Speaking of social, I wonder what you think of my idea of Social Unit Design. It's probably not a new idea, but it's gaining motion. Let me know, and add a comment if you like. I love your ideas.

Bonjour Anne. Thank you for the welcome message. By doing so, you are showing that beyond the "coolness" of the tools we now have, it's all about human connections, a community of practice comming together and exchanging. When I quickly look at all the faces in the intro page, I can't help but think that all these devoted teachers are truly great people... Have a great day!
    Salut!
  • Jacques Cool

As George Siemens puts it: "Here" means less and less, "connected" means more and more. Just came back from NECC in San Antonio (where a few of your fellow Aussies were). Loved the Global connections piece of the conference... Soooo many possibilities. I work with a great bunch of online teachers who are also having fun with their students; I see my role in getting them to use even more pertinent tools to odo better what they are doing well. Our Spanish teacher teaches from Tegucigalpa Honduras (this is great for "experiential learning"), our Advanced Math teacher is having his students do Art work (yes- art in advanced math) with students from Romania. Our Media Studies teacher coordinates a blog with her studenbts and students from Morocco, exchanging their views on major issues. teamwork, hard work, fun work = students learning...

I saw your comment made aat 4AM! but then saw that you're in Australia which must mean that the time stamp is at the server.....unless you're so dedicated to technology as to have given up sleep.

Isn't the FLIP camera a great thing! My wife carries hers around with her to all events.
  • Cathy

Thanks so much Anne. I look forward to collaborating with you.

    Anne:
    I absolutely love your video!
  • Debra Giannone

    Hi Anne,

    Thanks for the reassurance.
  • Tony Hine

    Hi Anne,
I have done some videos (screencams) aimed at power users, in other words they address some of the more difficult concepts in MS access, however I have thought about doing some screencams more suitable for beginners. If you thought it would be worthwhile, I would like to produce some videos for your students. If this is of interest you, and please let's discuss it, I would also need to see what the curriculum required.
  • Lorraine

I was interested in your reviews of the different options for connecting and collaborating. I'd be interested in trying out a one or two of your favorites with your students and would gladly show you the virtual classroom that I use with my students.
  • Audrey McGowen Fine

I need to check into that. Is this the link?
  • kelly graham

    Hi Anne,
Thank you so much for the resources I will review them and probably ask you more questions. As a principal sometimes it is hard to put all of the things necessary in place so in the trench teachers like your self are unbelievably helpful! Thanks again.

You are going to love them. They are sooo funny. and they LOVE technology. Some come with a whole lot of background knowledge, and others with very little. That's the biggest challenge. If you teach third, you have to let me know how it goes.

Hi Anne. Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog. It's great to meet someone else who is so enthusiastic about the possibilities of blogging and podcasting in schools. What do you use for blogging / podcasting? I've been using a mixture of edublogs/wordpress (blogging) and Garageband on the Mac / Audacity on the PC (podcasting). Some of the films we turned into podcasts are viewable on our site www.nwsclc.net.
It'd be really useful to share experiences and what works / didn't work so well!
  • Ann E Darling

    Hello Anne!
I see what you mean about making connections around the globe, I work in a small rural communtiy so web 2.0 is a godsend for us. The closest big city to us is Denver, Colorado. I'm hoping to use blogging with my digital photography students as a way for them to get and give appropriate feedback to a larger communtiy.
  • Melissa Benson

Yes, you're right! I think slowly but surely staff will be more open to (and explore or find out about) all of the great tech resources. There have been some great teachers I have met that are doing just that and I think best way of it catching on to others is seeing their colleagues do it and saying "hey, that's cool - show me!"
  • Erika Steele

Thanks for the welcome Anne. I did check out the SL group here at classroom 2.0. I didn't join or have any specific questions yet, but I'll continue to check it out.

    Hi Anne,
Unfortunately I missed your session yesterday as I was still getting organised. However, I will go back and listen.
I think there is a ground swell at the moment with Web2.0 and Social Networking. I think exciting times are ahead.

    Hi,

Things are really on track here in Beijing for the Olympics though with security so tight I have to remember to carry my passport and resident permit all the time. I have tickets to four final events and the Opening Ceremonies at the Paraolympics on September 6th.

I will also be at the Learning 2.0 conference in Shanghai. Our school is sending 6 of us this year. I am so excited about the conference. we will have to keep in touch.

  • Jan Smith

    Hi Anne,
I have a blogging question for you. In your experience what would you say are the minimum technology access requirements to sustain blogging successfully? In my circumstances I will be lucky to get 1.5 hours of lab time/week, and I have other projects and activities in mind beyond blogging for that time, too. Many but not all of my students have access at home, but I would like this to a class strategy, not "homework"--though if they are engaged in it, I am sure they will pursue it out of school.
So, in your experience how much computer time does a 11-12 year old student need to become a successful blogger?
I appreciate you opinion on this.
  • Becky Olanrewaju

    Hi Anne,
I didn't remember to ask,how is Australia and work over there?
i just sent you a friend request,i hope you wouldn't mind..
  • Julia

I'm so glad to know I have a new friend. Perhaps we can have our students communicate about some hot topics during the school year. We begin in late August. I hope by then I will have a good idea of what I am doing and where to begin. My skills are questionable and negotiating time will be tricky, but I am keeping an open mind and I'm sure with people like you support is just a few clicks away! Glad to know your on board.
  • Becky Olanrewaju

Thanks Anne for accepting my invitation!

    Hello Anne,
This project aims at European schools and is funded by the European Commission. We have partners from Poland, Slovakia, Turkey, Portugal, Italy, France and Spain. With the funding we are able to visit our partnerschools and discuss about our project. I must say that we are waiting for the approval from the commission to start the project. I think we will know the end of this month. I will keep you informed, is this OK for you ?
  • Stephanie Bullock

Thank you for the welcome, Anne. This is such a great space!
  • Becky Olanrewaju

    Hi Anne,
thankyou for your message but there's a misundestanding. I'm from Italy, I don't teach italian. I'm a science and chemistry teacher. I'm sorry for my poor english but, you know, Italy is not famous for its school system, is it?
  • Bart Van Bossuyt

Ghee Anne, thanks, I already feel at home. I like your cinematographic debut alot ;-).
  • DaveC

Hello Anne, nice to meet you too.

I just stumbled across a post of yours in the content and technology group. You mentioned that you had used digital story telling using photostory. I teach at the 5th grade level, ages 9-11 or so, and two teachers share about 50 students. This past school year (we're on summer break at the moment) my teaching partner and I used photostory3, as well as storytelling alice from www.alice.org, and a small project using voicethread.

One of the things that I think would be really fun to do is to eTwin with another school, particularly one from another country, and share some digital stories. If I'm not mistaken, you said you teach in Australia. If we could work it out, is this something you might be interested in doing?
