    Jim,

I read with interest your recent post about powerpoints and will take a look at those top 10 and comment when I find a moment (training teachers at a summer camp, its exhausting!). I have a lot to say on the subject and have a lot of experience producing educational powerpoints.

Lots more to say and just want to say I'll be intouch....from across the ocean here in Korea.

    Cheers,

    David

So, Jim, I'm inquiring about the status of finding videos of teachers actually teaching....were you successful in your hunt ?
  • Jim Lerman

    Hi Cindy,
Thanks for asking. I guess maybe you're a fellow seeker?
I put together a list based on what people sent and what I could find. Based on what I was looking for (unedited raw footage of teachers teaching in a classroom) the first source was the best for me. For other purposes, others will be better. Anyway, there's a lot of good stuff, and if you know of other sources, please let me know and I'll add them to the list so everything's all in one place.

    Jim,

Thanks for the invite. It looks as if we have common interests, online tools, brain based learning, etc. I look forward to communicating on these subjects. So, I am going to jump right in.

I am Director of Curriculum at a private school in Honduras. Our mix of instructional staff is 75% Honduran, 25% American. I am interested in getting our Honduran middle school staffers training in effective middle school instructional techniques. Our diagnostic math and reading scores are at their lowest in middle school. I realize that many students' brain growth is on hold while the maturation process kicks in, however I also know that our teachers could be applying middle school specific methods which would ensure student retention of previous learned skills while introducing new ones. We use differentiation but I think we need more.

As coordinator for the NJ Consortium of Middle Schools, do you know of any sources for teacher training in these areas? We send our teachers to training venues throughout the year and would like to find one specific to this area.

Wow, sorry about this note turning into a novel. I look forward to your advice.
  • Susan Brooks

    Hi, Jim,
    Thanks for the invite!
  • Jo Cochran

    Jim,

With our location, online would allow teachers to jump right in however sometimes I think they place more importance on training that they travel to. What did you have in mind?
  • Jo Cochran

By the way, Jim, I didn't write you at 6:07 am. I think we have a time difference happening here.
  • Judson Aungst

    Jim,
I would be more than happy to speak with you about moodlerooms.

Unfortunately I can't set you up with a hosting account. If you would like to call Bob McDonald he can answer any questions you might have and set up your course. His number is 443-451-7227.

If you have non hosting Moodlerooms questions give me a call 443-451-7218
  • Jo Cochran

    Greetings Jim,

I just finished budget and recruiting so I'm back on the training trail. We presently use online sources from Annenberg Foundation and ASCD Virtual Symposium but they don't seem to have much on middle school philosophy or instructional methods. I look forward to any you might suggest. Have a great day!
  • Jo Cochran

    Thanks Jim,

    I'll check these sites today.

I look forward to reading your comments. Best wishes; John

You may be interested in the film series, Adina's Deck ( www.adinasdeck.com ) which is perfect for the increasingly more tech-savvy middle school students. The films are short, entertaining and extremely "watchable" and are educational for kids, teachers and parents. Episode 1, the cyber bully pilot episode, won best student film at the International Family Film Festival. Episode 2 is the Case of the Online Crush, and touches on the dangers of online predators. Episode 3 in the Case of the Plagiarized Paper the deals with the consequences of cheating. The writers, directors, and lead cast members participate in live discussions when they have attended dozens school assemblies and film festivals. They are booked to appear at many more locations this school year. Like in Episode 1, the story-lines of Episodes 2 and 3 create a lot of "who-done-it" suspense, with plot twists that are sure to promote a lot of discussion on these real, timely topics. The students really get into the discussion topics, and want to know what the characters will do next. Adina's Deck is a valuable and socially important tool.
