Laura García and Álvaro Mediavilla founded Bablingua after working for three years as Visiting International Faculty (VIF) teachers in North Carolina.
We decided to start Bablingua because it was very difficult for us to find good learning materials during our stay in USA. Most of the Spanish videos and readings that we tried to use in our classrooms where too hard for our students, or they lacked interest or realism.
We found ourselves saying over and over again things such as “How I’d like to show my students how we celebrate New Years’ Eve!” or “If only I had a video of La Rambla, so the students could see what a Spanish street looks like!” But it was impossible. All the videos that we ordered where always about the same topics, and we don’t think that they were a good resource to explain what our country looks like.
When we showed pictures to our students that we had taken in Spain, we were surprised by the things that called their attention: cars, hair styles, fashion… It was a shame that we didn’t have good videos to show all these details.
We decided then to start Bablingua once we were back to Spain. Our goal is to provide great videos that really show our country, and that can be interesting and understandable for a foreign student.
Glad to know there are others who support appropriate use of video in the classroom. I'd like to know more about it. I will go to your website and check it out. I am currently publishing a book based on Cuentame como paso. I use it with upper level Spanish students right now. They enjoy learning through real content and seem to be able to focus better when they have something authentic.
We're working on our website at the moment, it'll be ready very soon. We are publishing some videos in advance to get feedback from other teachers, but we'll post a comment when our site is finally working so everybody can check our materials.
Our website is not ready yet, but we have a blog where we'll add new videos as often as we can. Please visit us at www.bablingua.com, and sign our mailing list. ¡Os esperamos!
I am very impressed with your endeavor. You have developed quite an impressive amount of educational materials, including the videos.
I was wondering if you have heard of two young friends, living in Spain, who formed the comedy group, Lari y Gafa. They began by making video shorts of their favorite songs, and my favorite is their parody of the Supergrass song, All Right.
Their work has really matured, and the last video I saw was most impressive and educational. It seems to be an original take on ways to save energy and natural resources in everyday life.
This video, Consells Medi Ambient, seems to be made as an advertisment for the Spanish public, and I think it is easy to understand. I laughed because it was funny, but their point was well made.
I just wanted to share some information about some creative videos you might also use in classes.
Thanks a lot for sharing your excellent videos. The website looks good but it is difficult to evaluate the materials as they are nearly all fee-paying...
