I've been teaching for 20+ years. I presently teach fifth grade, in a collaborative classroom, although I have taught all grades from 1-5 at some point in my career. I love using technology with the students. In fact, my website is a great source of information, includes class podcasts, and links to our blog site. I also teach classes on utilizing websites and use of the SmartBoard interactive whiteboard.

Hi Everyone,
This site is fairly new to me. I'm also new to social networking but am excited to be part of it all.
I teach fifth grade in a collaborative classroom...mostly regular ed, some special ed children included with a full time special ed teacher as my co-teaching partner.
We are looking to hook up with classrooms for next year. We study Canada and Latin America and would love to find connections in those areas in particular but would also love partners in other parts of the country (USA) or world. We are trying to have our students recognize their global importance and first need to have them recognize their part in a global community.
Writing partners, blogging buddies, video conferencing friends, etc. would all be wonderful.
Welcome! I (quickly) checked out your blog site and loved the Ellis Island references--all of our K-8 students went to Ellis as a culminating field trip last year (it will come up again in two years, due to the way we rotate our multiage classrooms (Intermediate grade 3-5 students especially!). I can only hope we can avoid the standing in line for the ferry during a torential downpour for an hour next time...
I will be back to look more thoroughly at your blog before then, I hope, but I've been rather overbooked lately.
I didn't want to miss the chance to welcome you, though, and to let you know that I really appreciated your contribution to the "Technology Trickle" thread. I really think many of our young ones are jumping into web experiences, to the extent that some 2d graders are way more experienced than some middle schoolers at moving an avatar through a maze (Sweet tarts, Timez Attack, etc.)! I'm still seeing a really troubling access divide, though.
Sue
Thanks, Sue, for looking at our blogs. Enjoy Ellis Island. Our visit was just a simulation in school. Each child got a role as either a processor or an immigrant in 1900. The kids had a blast and loved blogging about it!
Love, love, love it! In fact, I have been checking periodically today (Saturday) and have found that the students have been using it all day. My kids have made connections with other kids around the country, I have connected with other teachers, and the kids are writing on the weekends! What more could I ask for?
Though retired, I have a continuing collaboration with the Physics Department of a NYC area university. Prior to our current outreach program, we developed a portable met tower (meteorological) for deployment to schools for students to learn how to collect scientific data. The met tower is now sitting in a garage ... unused. (hint, hint). I think I could get one or two grad students to help set it up ... somewhere. Can't promise anything, but would be willing to try. By the way, the Chair of Department will vouch for me ... he's been the PI on most of this stuff.
Also, I would be willing to explore collaboration on projects via the internet. I'm a novice ... but I make a good go-fer.
Lisa,
Sorry I missed you this weekend. Maybe we can talk Monday night around 7:00. I will make sure I'm on Skype around this time. I can't wait to speak with you.
Valencia
Thanks Lisa - would love to collaborate with you if your school decide they are interested. We have now got a French and a Greek school on board too - let me know what you decide. Jo
Great news - for the book day I will start thinking and try to get some ideas together in the next few days - will pass on my full school details to you too asap so you know who we are!
I reposted your question about "modifying online work" within a forum entitled "making meaning--considering assessment" (a spin off from the earlier "making meaning" that you also participated in.) Hope that's ok. Just thought your question was so good that lots of people should have access to it!
Lisa Hi,
You and me both - until they get some audio into 2nd life, I find it very frustrating trying to find discussions to join in with - without looking a bit like a stalker just standing around - it makes me feel uneasy!!!!
I much prefer Skype and video conferencing f2f over the net...
I think I found a guy who may be able to answer your questions about the merits of SL. (It's not as if I went on a creepy seek-quest after our conversation, but simply noticed the guy's creditials as I was checking his page out). ;-)

Hi! Lisa
I am a mathematics teacher. I visited your blog. Its glad to see teachers using technology to help students learn in a better environment. I am also exploring web tools which can fit to my classroom. I have created a group of passionate teachers http://passionateteachers.ning.com .You are welcome to join. Add your drop of knowledge and expertise. Hi Lisa,
I added the VT in two places on our club's wiki.
http://nc-tech.wikispaces.com/%D7%93%D7%A4%D7%99+%D7%99%D7%A6%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%94
and
http://nc-tech.wikispaces.com/Voice+Thread
Our kids had a good time making the additions. This was a great introduction to VT for them.
Last week we commented on a VT containing a video clip on cyberbullying and next week the girls will be designing their own VT.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Hi Lisa,
We made one with an embedded movie clip about cyberbullying in hebrew.
at the bottom of this page:
http://nc-tech.wikispaces.com/Voice+Thread
You can see if your kids can understand the movie clip even though it's in Hebrew. Some of our kids added comments about the cyberbullying situation and how one should react if he encounters it!
Hi Lisa,
I'm a friend of Scott Weidig and he was telling me that you have a 4th grade teacher in your building that would be interested in doing some collaboration wtih Chris Van Allsburg's Harris Burdick. If she is still interested, could you please send me her name or have her contact me as soon as possible ? We are on Spring Break this week and I would really like to work with her so we can get geared up for our discussions in the following weeks. Thanks so much! Have a great week!
Lisa, I have not heard from anyone regarding the collaboration activity. I would really like to get this project up and running. There is another person who has asked me if I am willing to do some collaboration in the Chicagoland area. I would prefer to work with someone more global. However, if she can't do this right now, just let me know and I'll get in touch with this other person. Thanks so much! Have a great weekend!
I am relatively new here. I am from Ghana and I'm just here to learn, contribute as well as link up with like-minded people who will be willing to share their experiences as well as help in spreading the concept of distance learning and adult education to Africa, which lags behind as far as education is concerned. hope to find a friend in you.
Hi Lisa
I am looking for a good blog that can be monitored, is not blocked by schools, and students can set up their own blogs. You said in a post that you use Blogmeister. How do you like it? How do you get an account?
With your interest in web 2.0 stuff I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based, have a bunch of features and free basic service.
Hi Lisa. I was wondering if your students would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. If not, perhaps you have some educator contacts you could direct me to. You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!
What's your experience using smartboard whiteboard? I'm looking to import these to my classes but it's quite expensive and I'm not convinced to buy one.
