About Me
After growing up in Maui and getting my degree and teaching credential in San Diego; I began my career as an elementary classroom teacher. For the past ten years, I have been working at a charter school in California, serving students in grades K-12. Lifelong learning and innovative teaching are my passion! I love seeing how creativity, technology, and forward-thinking can combine to engage students and help them on the path of lifelong learning.

I am interested in technology tools that facilitate collaboration, communication and creativity.

My other interests are: cooking, travel (especially anywhere near the beach), concerts, NFL, photography, writing, blogging, networking, and Starbucks!

If you want to connect, share ideas, make a friendly football bet, or collaborate on a project, you can find me at:

http://lifelonglearning20.edublogs.org and my Networks: Classroom 2.0, ISTE, CUE, The Future of Education, LearnCentral, Ning in Education, and ISTE.

It was a pleasure to meet you and learn how you help K-12 students with special teaching style. Keep in touch.
  • Dipali Buch

Thanks for the link, I do not have my summer schedule right now so will have to wait on that :-)

Yes, they can comment. I use mediawiki and there is a "talk" tab for each page. That being said, commenting is not the strongest point of wikis.
  • Steve O'Connor

I think Blogs are better suited for discussion. In addition, there are a couple of extensions that can make WordPress function somewhat like a wiki. If you really are interested in in comments, there is a WordPress extension called commentpress that is in beta, but I think will be available very soon. I am helping with the testing.
  • Steve O'Connor

I use WordPress for myself and WordPRessMu for school. I am not a fan of "free" hosted services such as edublogs that attach ads and mine for personal information. I run my own rented server now, but I started with an inexpensive shared server account-- $5-10/mo and worth every penny as you can install all kinds of free software: blogs, wikis, and much more.

CommentPress is incredible and I look forward to deployment of the new version very soon. Iactually allows individuals to comment on individual paragraphs rather than the entire work at the end of the post.

If you would like to go this way, let me know and I can assist. I could even let you use a bit of server space temporarily. It is astonishingly easy to do.

    Hi Donelle,

The last newsletter had the subject line "photography videos, text-to-speech, and a careers grant" and went out about three weeks ago, I believe. I'll try resending it, and feel free to send a second address if something odd is going on with your gmail account. I'm at rh(at)nextvista(dot).org.

Your CR20 page and your blog look great, Donelle. You have been busy. Guess those Starbucks Iced Americanos have helped! Here's a question I forgot to ask the other day: what do you find to be most challenging - most difficult - about writing?
  • Greg Limperis

Donelle, You did not miss it. I think the origional time posting was wrong. The meeting is tonight at 9:30 EST. You can still join if you wish.

  • Kimberly Munoz

No we don't, but that sounds interesting and I think some of our kids would like it. Right now just looking for 2.0 tools to help with our 1:1 integration with students and teachers. So I will def. be taking you up on your offer to ask for help! ;0) Online learning was an area that teachers felt they didn't have much access to for prof. development. As a tech teacher just trying to help out. Also going to a moodle training soon so I know that will be another tool. I've used it before with my classes, but very limited so never gave it the chance I'm about to. It seems Elluminate is pretty big....is that costly...do you know? Anyways, thanks for the add and looking forward to collaborating!
  • Kimberly Munoz

Our district is offering the moodle training this summer as a workshop. Thanks for the tip on elluminate! I will try that and it would be cool to attend a workshop with you virtually. ;0)
  • Gail Mitchell

    Hi Donelle,
I will add you to my skype and then watch for when you are online.
    Chat soon
    Regards
    Gail
  • Kimberly Munoz

You're awesome! Thursday or Friday would be good for me as well. Just let me know when! Looking forward to it!
    Kim
  • Eric Jarvis

I'm not going to be able to make it to NECC in DC. Will you be presenting at CUE next year?
  • Eric Jarvis

I recommend presenting at CUE. They are accepting proposals for concurrent sessions through Sept. 11th.

Here's a link to their request for speakers:

    http://www.cue.org/conference/present

I want more time to see what others are doing, so I passed on submitting a three-hour workshop. That deadline passed last week, I believe.
  • Christina McKinnis

It's a very old picture but it helps me deceive my current look...
  • Kimberly Munoz

    Hey Donelle,
I saw you mentioned on twitter that we were set up for Thursday to do an elluminate training, but wasn't sure of the details. I checked learn central to see if something was posted but couldn't find anything. Could you tell me what time it starts? Don't want to miss it. ;0) Hope your having a great day!
    Kim
  • Kimberly Munoz

Ugh! Totally forgot about that meeting. Dang it. It sounds like we're going to have a better chance signing up for one on that sight where the trainings are posted for anyone to attend. I'm going to be tied up Tues and Wed with curriculum writing and then all next week with subbing summer school and a moodle training for 2 days. The week after that.....vacation. But while I'm working I'll still be checkin in here and everywhere else. ;0) NECC is going to be awesome.....wish I was going with ya, but maybe next year. I'm gonna work on it!
  • Kimberly Munoz

Would LOVE to hear from you while your at NECC! ;0) So fun! The TCEA conf in Austin, Tx is the one I go to and it's usually the first week of Feb. Check it out http://www.tcea.org/convention/2010/Documents/index.html not sure how much info they have up yet for 2010. Hoping to present there this year, but won't know until Sept. You have a fabulous Tuesday girl! Glad to be communicating with you! ;0)
  • Kim Pericles

Hi Donelle - thanks for the welcome! Am already here in DC, looking forward to tomorrow :-)
  • suehellman

HI Donelle -- sorry to be so long getting back to you. I'm here at NECC and so are the Wilkes people. If you want to take a look at the blog I"m maintaining for them, please go to this page of my Small Changes; BIG RETURNS tools wiki and you can link from there. The courses can be very intense, but I'm learning a lot from the process of allowing myself to be challenged by the content and trying to find ways to incorporate new ideas into the tool chest of an old teacher (moi). There's a ning that is in development as well, and thanks to the 21st century thinking of another Canadian student, many of us are trying to take the same courses and we meet online in Elluminate on Tuesdays at 6:00 Pacific time. I started by lurking and listening there to see if it was what I really wanted.
  • Chris Lindsay

Thanks for the friend request! Had a great time at edublog con. Hope you did too - I'll look for you during necc!
  • Josh Paluch

    Hi Donelle,
I'm both a doc student in EdTech at the Univ. of Florida and a 4th grade teacher. I'm currently researching the explicit educational value of SNSs for elementary students and have just happened on elgg. I know Ning is a no-no for the <13 crowd, but hear that elgg might be somehow different. Do you have an opinion on what tools/services I should be looking at? Thanks, Josh

  • Beth Still

Are you still alive. We HAVE to talk!!! It is important.

Donnelle, are you using any video conferencing technologies at your school district? Check out www.appiavideo.com. Desktop PC based mulit point video conferencing. It is a new technology launch for us and since you are a technology evangelist I would like to hear your feedback. Feel free to contact me at mp@appiaservices to demo the service.

Hi Donelle, saw that you are in Rocklin where the 49ers practiced years ago. My name is Leon Avrech, San Jose CA and a 49er fan, not too many miles from their new practice hdqs in Santa Clara. I wanted to share with you that I recently had a book published that I hope you will tell new teachers about and those planning to be teachers. The title is,THINK YOU CAN TEACH? A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS. It is available from xlibris.com, amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com I am retired after 37 yrs in middle school as teacher, vp, principal and mentor teacher. I had a passion for teaching my 8th grade U.S History classes. The book begins with the first day on campus to the end of year evaluation.
Lesson plans, yard duty, parent conferences, are among the many topics covered.
    Thank you.
