I am the general music teacher and choir director at Ridgeway Middle School in Memphis, TN. Technology has become an integral part of instruction and learning in my classes. My students utilize online applications such as Voicethread, Quizlet, our class blog, and various web-based activities. We received a Best Buy TeachAward in 2007 that allowed us to purchase computers, digital camcorders and cameras, and software for our classroom. This technology was used to develop and create multimedia projects that engage every student and address multiple learning styles.
This is an interesting project. What program did you use to create the video? I can think of several ways that I can use this in a library setting. I am new to Ning. TDodson
Dear Ken,
Thank you for your invitation to join your class. I think your project is very interesting. I am also very impressed on the creative videos you posted. This project will definitely stimulate students' creation and attitude to the future. I love it. It is a great opportunity for my students to corporate with your class through this project. Please email to me at giang_tran117@yahoo.com, and we will find way to do it
Hi Ken, I'm teaching one class of Grade 7 at an international school in Switzerland where technology is integrated into the science curriculum. The rest I'm teaching elementary IT. Let me see how I can join with your class on this. I liked looking at their vision of the future. Am trying to do more with Voicethread myself so this could fit in nicely. Maggie
This would be very cool! I have never worked with Voicethread before, so this is perfect for this class I am taking at Drexel University. Let me take a look at this early this week and get back to you!
~Looking forward to working with you! btw -what school/grade did your wife teach in DASD?
I have never tried voicethread. I think my students would love this. I have found that my students (and I) have a very narrow view of the world. I had one gal in 8th grade a few years ago tell me, "there are whites and Indians". It blew her mind when we went to a track meet and one team had their names on the back of their shirts. I explained the way the name is spelled sometimes can show what culture they are from. This is when she brought out that she thought their was only "whites and Indians", she did not realize there are many "White" cultures. I would really like to do this. I believe it would be a very valuable lesson for myself and my students.
Hi Ken,
Sounds great mate! I'm very new to voice thread so I'll explore it a little over the next 24 hours and get back to you. I'm teaching an immigration, refugee, and multiculturalism unit to my year 9s at the moment, so a connection would work well.
Zac
I am a teacher librarian at an elementary music academy so they could discuss music and other matters. I have a Tech Team which will be learning web 2.0 tools and we have a third grade class working on letter writing and could make it their project. I'm not sure how this works, how they write eachother but I am interested. I will visit your site tomorrow.
I signed up for the free voice thread for educators and played around with it yesterday. We have today off for Native American day, I'm going to mess with it more. I was reading an book called "The Strangest Secret". Here is an exert from it: "Suppose a farmer has some land, and it's good, fertile land. The land gives the farmer a choice; he may plant in that land whatever he chooses. The land doesn't care. It's up to the farmer to make the decision.
We're comparing the human mind with the land because the mind, like the land, doesn't care what you plant in it. It will return what you plant, but it doesn't care what you plant.
Now, let's say that the farmer has two seeds in his hand- one is a seed of corn, the other is nightshade, a deadly poison. He digs two little holes in the earth and he plants both seeds-one corn, the other nightshade. He covers up the holes, waters and takes care of the land...and what will happen? Invariably, the land will return what was planted.
As it's written in the Bible, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap."
Remember the land doesn't care. It will return poison in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. So up come the two plants - one corn, one poison.
The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn't care what we plant...success...or failure. A concrete, worthwhile goal...or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on. But what we plant must return to us.
You see, the human mind is the last great unexplored continent on earth. It contains riches beyond our wildest dreams. It will return anything we want to plant."
I was thinking of having my students reflect on what they sow in their lives and minds and what it might reap in the future. Sometimes on the reservation life can look so bleak - however I would like them to know it doesn't have to be that way - if they so choose. This is a project I would like to do. Jeannine
I have had to have PE out in our parking lot since school has started - since they decided that they would put a new floor in my gym when school started -I'm to be back in the gym by next Monday (I really hope so - it is really getting cold out). I'm to have 6 computers for my gym when I get in. I would love to do something with the idea of "you reap what you sow" and team work. I was thinking of have a group of three or four(with one computer) come up with something they could publish with the theme of "your reap (in the future) what you sow (now). And of course it would have an activity flavor to it.Thank you for the invite on Nov 1st. If we get inside - I will see what we can get put together.
Hello Ken, I saw yours website, and I heard yours Voicethread. I am very impressed. It is a great work. I teach college (undergraduate and graduate) students and my classes are not the right one in that stage for the kind of activity you suggest. I will keep track you throw Twitter.
Thanks a lot. I hope we will find an opportunity to cooperate in the future
Yours
Gil Amit
Ken, I told my 8th grade students about you and your classes - they said they would love to meet your 8th grade students - could we do this sometime on video chat or what other means could there be - we have v-tel?
I think you have it going on here with technology. You have a classroom setup for this activity. I will look into it a little more. Do you have good luck with students bloging/ chating/responding about the classroom assignment? Thanks Tami Dodson
This voicethread was created by my 8th and 6th grade general music students. We hope to meet students from around the world, discover what we have in common with each other, and strengthen our global perspective through meaningful conversations and engaging collaborations.
Please post your comments - text, audio, or video - and tell us about yourselves. What would you like us to know about you? What do you have in common with us? We look forward to meeting you!
My sons and I viewed the voice thread. Jr. High kids are all the same - that is why I love that age!!!!!. I'm excited to show my students this - I will probably do this on Friday in Health class. And is my understanding correct, that we can make a comment back either with voice or typing - there is also a way for video comments right - All our laptops have the cameras?
Hi, I also like voicethread.com. Here is a Turkish lesson I created for an Italian teacher who is trying to learn Turkish. It shows a typical Turkish breakfast and teaches some words. Hope you like it. Kristina
Hi Ken,
I used voicethread a couple of years ago with a class in New Zealand. It is a great tool. I will talk about your request with our music teacher Aryo. I'll get back to you after I have talked to him.
Jane
I really wanted your kids to be able to see what my kids look like - I think I will take a picture of the class and put that in as the avatar and then have them leave the comments - can I keep adding comments or will it be all on the same one comment? The students are going to be working with red ribbon week this week - there will be some presentations - dancing, posters, poems and students talking about being drug - free. I will try to send this for Nov. 1st.
Hey Ken.
Great idea.
I will be looking at the threads posted by you and will also include the music teacher at our school Jake Eades .
Will get back to you next week for sure.
Dear Ken, do you use skype id? i see you online now. you can read what our students have written for your and your students' information.
My Country- Nepal
My country, Nepal, lies in South Asia. It’s I known as the country of Mt. Everest also. Nepal is famous for second richest country in water resourc and country of natural diversity. Along with cultural diversity, it is the country of geographical and climatic variation also. In the south there is plain area where is very hot. In the middle, there are hills covered with forest and agricultural fields. In the north taller and tallest mountains and top of the world lie with their highest peak.
Besides, Nepal is full of rivers, ponds, and valleys. Our country is full of natural beauties. Tourists from many parts of the world come to Nepal to see beautiful scenes of nature and snow-capped mountains. Regarding history of Nepal, it is the country of Gautam Buddha. Buddhists regard Nepal as a place of destination since it is birth place of Buddha. We are proud of being a citizen of the country of Buddha and Everest. We love our country not because of only buddha and Everest but because of also religious and cultural tolerance among people. There are hundreds cultures, religions, castes and races but they have never misunderstood. They have been living being brothers and sisters of the same country.
Nepal is beautiful but it is a bit backward in development. Nepalese are hardworking but no leader of the country led the people for development. My country is waiting for a real leader to lead the people to the real world of development. Anyway, I love my country and culture.
We respect all the religions and cultural groups.

Our school starts at 9:45am and finishes at 4 pm from Sunday to Thursday. And on Friday, school finishes at 1pm. We have 7 periods (subject classes) every day.We learn English language, Nepali language, Math, Science, Social studies, G.K.(General Knowledge) etc. We have extra activities like competitions or programs on Fridays. We bring some food from our home and eat. We bring beaten rice, roasted corn, roasted wheat, biscuits, chapatis, etc. for our lunch. And some of our friends bring noodles or bread sometimes.

Thank you for the note, and the invitation to communicate with you/your students. I will pass that information along to our music teachers. We are just beginning to look at ePals, so interest is only cursory at the moment, but I will give them the link to your web site, and hopefully, it will generate at least some curiousity.
Beautifully done, by the way, and what wonderful projects!
Kudos!
Hi Ken, sorry to take so long but I just got round to adding a comment onto your VoiceThread. I put it onto the part with the 2 girls speaking Spanish. I am going to see if I can find a photo of an alpine horn to send you to show your students - it's a sort of national instrument here in Switzerland. It sounds amazing. Just two or three of these horns sound like an entire brass band! Your students look so enthusiastic and keen on music and it is great to see them on this VoiceThread.
Hi Ken, Yes! Yes! Yes! We would be very keen - we are a multi-cultural school in West Auckland NZ. At the moment our main concept is 'Celebrations' - so linking up and celebrating our similarities and differences would be awesome. My learners are a little bit younger than yours. Mostly 9-10 year olds. Next year, our main concept is 'Diversity'. We have been looking to link up world-wide for some time. Looking forward to getting this underway. Unfortunately as you may be aware - we only have three weeks of school left until our big Christmas break so we'll have to get started ASAP. We also have a music specialist at our school. She is amazing. She connects with our talented learners through music. Anyway - I'm off to investigate Voicethread! Ka kite...
Hi Ken,
I have added a photo of 2 men playing the Alpine Horn to my page. I took this photo just up the road from my house when I was out for a walk one day.
Best wishes,
Maggie
Hi Ken: Thank you very much for your offer. This is really nice. Let me see if is possible connect with your pupils in this Lab. What time is it in Tenessi and What time do you prefer connect? Cheers, Lucía
Hello Ken!
Thank you for your invitation. Yes, we are very interested on this kind of cultural exchanging. Unfortunatly we are almost finishing this year and closing for summer holliday. Would you like to start next year? Our classes will start on february.
We have a very peculiar methodology, based on projects completed decided by the children. They decide the theme and the activities and we insert the knowledge we must teach. I think our children have a lot of stories to tell and a lot of ideas to exchange.
Best wishes,
Marcelo.
Hi Ken: Thanks for your answer too. At the moment is not possible to me connect. I need more time... I am really sorry because the activity can be very interesting. Please, let me time and I keep in touch. Have a nice weekend and thanks again, Lucía
Hello Ken!
Indeed, our methodology allows our students to decide a lot of things. I have been developed it for the last 3 years and now I think we have achieved a very reliable technic to NOT teach, but let them learn by themselves. I am finishing a book about our work, and I intend to publish it in english too (now it is only in portuguese). As soon as the english version is ready, I will send you a copy to have your feedback.
Have a nice week!
Marcelo Rodrigues
Thank you very much for help .
You are the instructors. What type of music ? Sing or play musical instruments, but if teachers teaching a donkey music because I love playing guitar classic . Music is my life.
Ken,
I just sent a message to you. I teach at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York, and I'm interested in collaborating. My tech director gave me your link and mentioned a music project?
Hey Ken,
I contacted my music teacher a month back with your exciting project. He was at that time off for a break as he lost his grand mum and now the school is closing for christmas.
I have viewed the links you sent me and will be very interested in taking this forward. Will touch base with you in the mid Jan month.
Meery Christmas and best wishes for the new year.
Hey Ken, just a note to say hello - and I still think about the hoop dancing and trying to get it set up. I took on another consulting job and WOW - time is valuable. I don't want to let your kids down and my kids still ask, so........I will try to make this a priority to get planning! Jeannine
I haven't been on here since the fall and just saw your message. Sounds interesting. What grade level(s) do you teach? I am at a school in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and teach Gr. 7/8 Strings as well as Core French, Language and Computers. I am familiar with Voice Thread but haven't used it at school yet. If you are still interested in setting something up, let me know.
Ken Greene- thank you very much message.I teach in paramedic college and i have been pioneering e learning and integrating e learning with regular curricula. Now, this type of learning is very very new, however, i am will try and link you up with some international school that has a lot of locals- i know a teacher that we have working together in installing and configuring Moodle-our last meeting were working on the grade book of Moodle- he is also going to introduce e learning in his school- but i will naturally try my best, feel free to push me, currently i am the local guru in terms of e learning and also fixing small silly problems with ICT ie blown fuse or unplugged cable.Bottom it is quite new, may be your students may guide the students on that field. Thanks ken, i am passionate with web 2.0 tools and i like helping
Hi Ken. Yes yes ! I love the idea of collaborative learning for my students and my students love it too. We have been doing some shared learnings on the same topic you mentioned like culture and heritage. And we do on skype video calls and emails and blogs. And your class could also join us in our edmodo.
please visit my class blog at : http://1azim.blogspot.com
I look forward to connecting our classes together very very soon :-)
Hi again Ken, I am glad you like our class blog. And if you want to join our edmodo page, the code you have to type is 5cxobc.You can also give that code to your students so that they can communicate with my students over here. I have a group of crazy intelligent girls and boys who are now playing around with google translate. Funny when you read them.
I knew about people using Voicethread but havent tried it yet but if you were going to use that then I think I will choose one fine day and sit in front of my computer and play around. I'll come back and tell you later, kay :-)
