I'm a New Yorker, and want to move to Vancouver. I love the immersion model, and would like to try something new. I teach history and German in English...
I'm at the point where I still need to work hard to pass the tes to teach in the French imm. classroom (from University of B.C, I believe), as I suspect I might not pass it now...What are the qualifications, besides the test? I have no for-credit courses in French. Would that be a stumbling block?

Nein, ich bin Kanadier, aber ich spreche Deutsch. French Immersion is a programme that has existed in Canada since the late 60's thanks to Pierre Trudeau. Students in our Board begin to do all their courses in French at Grade 4 level. At Grade 7, a couple of courses revert back to English, and by Grades 9 and 10 they do about one-third in French - Language, Geography, History, Business, Dramatic Arts, Civics and Careers - courses like that. But it does depend on the school and the board. Some high schools offer math and science in French or art and phys ed. We are more oriented towards the social sciences. Some boards also introduce immersion much earlier at kindergarten.
