Hope you had a nice winter break. I was wondering if you or your students would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. If not, perhaps you have some educator contacts you could direct me to. We'd really like to get students involved from NY!
You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!
Charley you can change your settings by going to my settings on the left and that takes you to a page that includes on the left side: Privacy. Click on that and the next page will allow you to customize your blog: you can then invite me to join your page.
Does that make sense? Try it and let me know.

Hi Charley,
I see your posts now. I just moved my blogs to a new home. Maybe that's why I didn't see your recent posts. Your blog is probably an opened one. So far I don't see anything that needs to be confidential but you can make this private and invite me to join you.

Today was a snow day. It originally started as only a two hour delay, but as the bad weather conditions persisted, the school authorities cancelled the entire day. It couldn't have come at a better time for Thursday was very trying. My coordinating teacher was gone for the day and I took the reins teaching and the substitute rode shotgun. Sorry for the wild west refrences Partner. Back to Thursday, by days end I had to ask the class trouble-maker to leave the room and remain in the hallway till class was over. I received kudos from the other teachers for my actions and the trouble-maker and myself shouldn't have any more problems, but I still wish it didn't happen. I'll comment more on this incident tomorrow.
Are you the only person privy to this Bonnie?
Thanks,
Charlie
This is my original statment that Bonnie has been commenting on: It is prep period now followed by another prep, go figure. I gave my subject heading that title because the school I am placed in, Greenwood Lake Middle School in Orange County, is a dream. Prior to my placement I wasn't thinking of ever teaching at the middle school level, but after a few days here I'm not so sure. I was headed to the upper grades because of the literature we would be encountering, but after some investigating, the array of works at this level is very satisfying to me. As for the making a better world aspect, the kids are more impresssionable at this age and a tad easier to shape.
Today, Thursday, and also last Tuesday, my CT was out of school at meetings like I have read so many other fellow student teachers say in their messages, my question to them is this, are you left alone to run the class, or is their a sub with you? If you are left alone the school is at fault. Being a union man at heart, the school is not allowed, by law and union mandates, to leave us alone with students. I know we are all capable of handling a class, but imagine after graduation and you are working as a sub and the school you work at informs you your not being hired that day because they have a student teacher who can cover your classes.
I stopped by the Cornwall Library last Saturday and met a librarian who is out of this world. I'm meeting with her this Saturday and she is going to impart her over 35 years of young adult literature knowledge to me. If anyone wants to meet her let me know, she truly is a hip, innovative person to meet.

On the issue of supervision. It is a law the when your CT is out of the building her classes must be covered by an employee and a student teacher doesn't fit into that category. Of course, though feel free to use the time to get to know the kids and cover her classes with lessons that she shares with you. It's a good opportunity to make early connections with the kids and the class work. Subs are generally more than happy to observe.

Welcome Charley,
Glad you see you up and running. So now how about sharing some of your initial reflections on the classes you will be working with and the ways you are getting to know the kids.
