About Me: My name is Gwen Hoenke and I am a third year student at NMU. I am double majoring in Secondary Education Mathematics and Spanish. Marquette is my hometown, and I love the Upper Peninsula because of its beauty and outdoor activities. I originally started college at the University of Pittsburgh and was studying to be an engineer. However, my love of Marquette and my passion for education caused me to change my major and come back to the U.P. My passion for mathematics, love of working with kids, and desire to make a difference in the lives of my students all contributed to my decision to become a teacher. In my free time, I love to bike, swim, hike, and run. I am very active at NMU and am in several student organizations, including the All Student Conduct Board, Student Leaders Fellowship Program, Superior Edge, and Platform Personalities. Last winter, I also volunteered as a teaching assistant for the First Year Experience program at NMU.
I also love to travel. This past year, I spent the winter semester in Spain. While in Spain, I had the opportunity to assist in a night school for children learning the English language. Through this experience, I had the unique opportunity to apply both my Spanish knowledge and teaching skills while working with children. I also spent my summer in Ecuador, studying Spanish and volunteering in a special needs school. In this school, students had disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy to autism. After college, I would love to find a job teaching mathematics in an urban area with a high Hispanic population to apply both my love of Spanish and love of mathematics in the classroom.
