My ideas all center on opening the minds of inner city youth to the opportunities that await them in their communities and around the world through technology training and integration. I feel it is important to make a concrete link between classroom study and real world demand for skilled multicultural, multilingual artisans, who will be able to design, build, repair, and maintain our infrastructures in the years to come.
One of the goals of my professional career is to bring technology education and training back into the mainstream of instruction. At Hyde Park Academy we have increased enrollment by 118% over a two year period: this year there are at least 90 applicants for 48 course positions. We created an after school technology recycling program that serves 40 students with an annual budget of $65,000. The long-term plan for this program is to build in a self-sustaining management and expansion schema that will function regardless of the dynamics of educational change at the local and national level. As part of this program in the last four years one instructor has gone on to be a certified Illinois teacher, two others are fully paid technology instructors and three more are paid instructor interns. In this way we can better prepare those that would teach the next generation of American leaders.
Projects include the redesigning and reconstruction of a secondary school in Cameroon, infrastructure upgrades for school in Tanzania, and the continued cooperation with secondary schools in Santiago Papasquiaro, Mexico to improve educational building design and infrastructure.
In the continuous battle for resources to help students realize their full potential in competing and joining the global economy the goal is success. With perseverance, patience, and numerous supporters who believe in the hopes and dreams of the youth we serve, not only will these projects be realized but our students will become a much sought-after commodity in the world market.
