About Me: I work for the Smoky Hill Education Service Center in Salina, Kansas, which supports seventy-some school districts in north-central and north-western Kansas. I'm mostly just a geek who loves working with students and teachers! I work in area schools and also provide workshops and training sessions on using all the technology tools we can find to improve learning for teachers and students.
The most important part of my day is to learn something new, and I'm so intrigued by the web 2.0 applications I've tried. I've started working with teachers to implement as many of them as I can get them to try! It's an easy sell - a 'try it you'll like it!' phenomenon. What is there NOT to like about web 2.0?

Another Reason We NEED Our "Social" Tools

I haven't written here in a long time, and I don't usually cross-post. But this time, it's different. Here goes:

I have a grandson (actually, three grandsons and three granddaughters, but I digress already...) Grandson in the middle attends school in a large city district in another state. The Internet world of many teachers I mentor at several different schools has been shaken up recently by the installation of “new and improved” school filtering systems. "To realize what happened with the kids during this project is awesome. Now I understand - the light has dawned. Situational Awareness

My husband is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant, and even though we’re a few years out from living that wild, wonderful, crazy existence of being in the military, we have children in the military now and still try to follow what is going on in that world.

I am a part of a group of 6 Olin College students (we're in Needham, MA, and engineering students) who has taken a year off to work on an education related project. Since you are in the 'e-learning and online teaching' group, I thought you might be interested! Our project is called AlightLearning, and this is our "short" project description:

Under the assumption that within ten years, the landscape of modern education will have fully integrated what we now define as new classroom media: video, online collaboration, open source curriculum and other web tools, we hope to pioneer a web software tool that acts as a platform for this new media, bringing the power of the web and its tools to students, teachers and parents in a secure, comfortable and innovative environment. Our goal is to have our free software at a pilot middle school by April 15th, 2009, continuing to develop and coordinate with our users to create a product that other schools want to pilot and use at their schools, while allowing individual teachers to implement this tool in their own classroom.
