Additional thoughts from Disrupting Class

Should computers be the focus of all activity? They can certainly connect people in far distant place, and provide curriculum that local sources are not able to provide. (This is the "why AP is good" argument.)

What about socialization ?? Children socialized to computers are not socialized to each other!

There are subtle social cues that one learns only from in the flesh interaction. Let me let you about the 18 year olds who "invade space"!

Education is a PUBLIC GOOD.… Continue

Disruptive technology? Cell phone!

The more I think about it, the cell phone must be the emerging technology with the greatest diruptive potential. Now that cell phones are well underway to becoming both ubiquitous and high powered (check out the G3 and other iPhones!) -- truly the tricorder of "Star Trek" fame-- they can do a lot in the classroom too, if properly programmed.

"Properly programmed"?!? That's a biggie, I admit! Like the handhelds in the MUVE "River City", cell phones should be able to access data about… Continue

So many tools

To be honest, it's been a little hard keeping all these new tools organized. I've had to remember many different user names, passwords, and email addresses, but I am enjoying what they all have to offer. This one seems like a great way to collaborate with colleagues and utilize a number of different tools all in one place, like blogs, wikis, social networking and more. I am always looking for an all-in-one solution to my tech needs, which is probably why I bought an iMac! As many tools as there… Continue

Teaching Students about Veterans/Remembrance Day

Whether you are celebrating Veterans Day, Remembrance Day or Armistice Day, you join with millions around the world who regard this date as an important event. On November 11th, we honor men and women who fight and have fought to preserve the freedoms we enjoy. The Internet can be a great resource for teachers looking to help their students learn more about the sacrifices our veterans have made. For younger students, teachers can download some… Continue

Technology or Just the Latest Gadget

Certain applications such as Ning, iGoogle and NetVibes allow you to structure the manner in which you recieve information and network. These applications are helpful to avoid "tech overload", as each new day brings a newly touted technology to the forefront. The problem with many of the new technologies is that people beleive that each one is the new answer to making students computer literate in the 21st century. Eventually, some of the technologies will rise to the top, but for now, each one… Continue

Technology

Isn't technology wonderful? When it works. Ha! Here I thought I was a technology person. This class has really humbled me. Ning is way cool, but I'm still not too confident. Can't there just be one place everything can be synced to so you don't have to link to EVERYTHING? It seems like as soon as you learn about one cool thing and get going on it, you hear about something else. Whew. This ning seems like the best way to organize everything so far. Unless someone else has something else to… Continue

Halloween in the United States

Last night was Halloween. It's a time when children (and sometimes adults) dress up as fairies, princesses, super heros, animals, and creatures of the underworld and go door-to-door asking neighbors for candy. They call this, 'trick or treating'. My family doesn't play a major role in this particular holiday, as we are Christians and don't advocate the tennants of it. However, we don't mind at all when a child comes knocking on our door and asks us for a treat. We welcome it. It's nice to see… Continue

David Warlick at Seattle NSBA T & L Conference

This past week I had the opportunity to attend the Technology and Learning Conference in Seattle. David Warlick gave the keynote address on the last day of the conference. I thought that I would comment on a couple of the points he made during his address. One was his proposal to change the emphasis on education from the the three Rs (Reading, "Riting, and "Rithmatic to the four Es

1. Expose what is true

2. Employ information

3. Express ideas compellingly

4.… Continue

More about the NSBA T & L Conference

I attended many sessions at the conference two on classroom walk throughs. One walk through used the FLIPvideo camera to record what the students were doind in the classroom during the walkthrough (the message being "It's not about teaching, it's about learning"). After the walkthrough the administrator emailed the three minute video to the teacher, the teacher viewed the video and completed a reflection sheet. After this the admin and teacher met to discuss the teachers… Continue

Aren't They Cute!

Halloween is so much more fun as an adult opening the door to cute little princesses and pirates. It makes me sad to see this harmless activity dwindle as parents become more fearful for their children. I live in a small rural town in central Oregon, surrounded by single family homes with many little children. My overflowing bowl of candy sits 3/4 full as only about 20 little ones have eagerly rung my doorbell. My cute little granddaughter, wrapped up as a purple butterfly may not ever enjoy… Continue

Document Camera Frustration

Last year my school was very fortunate in the fact that all the teachers recieved document cameras. However, ever since I recieved my it has been trouble. All last year I couldn't us it because it wouldn't focus, so I had our school tech person take a look, fellow teachers and our district tech person. By the end of the year we finally fixed the focus. Now I have realized the light on my document camera doesn' t go bright enough and it doesn't show true color. For example dard colors (like… Continue

When will it end?

I’ve just twittered, ning’ed, rss’d, moodled, twined (well I was there but decided not to) and I’ve got to admit I’m feeling kinda bloggy. How do people find the time to keep up with all this ________, (be nice there’s more than four _’s). I’m at a loss as to how to describe it. I see the benefits of the various networks but feel that selecting one tends to mutually exclude one’s self from the others. (Again, there’s just not enough time to keep up with all the various networks). It was nice to… Continue
