Character Poster

Creating the character poster was an interesting experience. I liked making the poster because I wsa unfamiliar with Excel and this helped me use it in a way I had not experienced before. Also having children in your classroom make a character poster can make things more interesting and personal for your classroom.

Character Poster

I found that using Excel instead of Word to create the character poster was much easier. With word, if everything isn't in a straight line, it's hard to manipulate the pictures, text boxes, word art, etc. With Excel, there's no worry about trying to change the formatting of the picture so that you can get it just how you want it. It was very easy to insert the picture, and move it to whenever you want and then insert text boxes over the picture. I…

Spring Break Safety

Spring Break is right around the corner (some have already began their mid-season vacations) and Kiwi put together a list of tips and faux pas for both students and parents to consider during their holiday. A simple Google search on 'Spring Break' will provide a myriad of pictures displaying both young guys and girls, half naked and doing things that I am sure most teachers and parents would not approve of. Of course not all kids and teens will engage in the typical MTV type Spring Break, but… Continue

Character Poster

Describing yourself with one positive adjective isn't as easy as you would think, especially when it has to be presented nicely on a poster. For my night class, we had to use Microsoft Excel to create a poster with an image, adjective describing ourselves, a definition of the adjective, and our names. This poster was to be laminated and 4 pages in size.

Now when I first sat down to create this four page poster, I… Continue

The character poster is something neat that can be used in the classroom. Not only can character posters be made, but other things can be made as well that can be posted in a classroom. I enjoyed making the poster and although I had trouble figuring it out, I had fun. I think this would be fun to do with students, but only if they're old enough. But even if the students…

kindergarten plant science

I'm currently an education student and I am going to be doing a class where the students are going to be moving around to different plant stations, each an activity teaching them about plants. Does anyone have any suggestions for fun activitties? Each activity needs to be about five minutes in length and simple enough for a five year old to do.

Thoughts on Student Motivation

Dan Pink delivered an interesting talk on motivation and the problems associated with extrinsic motivation. According to Pink, research has shown that certain sorts of extrinsic incentives or what Pink refers to as “contingent motivators” actually dull thinking and stifle creativity.MORE...

A Second Grade Project - What programs are newest and best for grades one and two?

Thank goodness for the techie in our school who helped me design a really nice project to do with my second graders after I had seen an NCSS webinar which promoted all the wonderful 2.0 web tools teachers can use. Unfortunately, most of the wonderful technology tools want you to upload pictures from the web. KidPix is an old program, but at least the students can draw what they really want to and add texture to the ocean, or to a cloud, etc. for a background.

My second…

Needed: New Expectations

If you were to make a graph of the appropriate closeness of a teacher to a student, it would be inversely proportionate to the academic abilities of the student. Therefore, the more academically capable the student, the more relational distance to their teacher. This could be partially due to the number of students in general education classes, versus a resource room versus a student in a one-on-one situation.

Consider how much a teacher knows about a student's family of home life. The… Continue

What Makes a Good Teacher?

I just finished reading "Building a Better Teacher" and I have to say, I feel worried.

I’m worried that people in the business of teaching teachers claim that successful teaching depends partially on an innate ability. The un-teachable teacher…is that not the ultimate oxymoron?

I’ll agree that some people seem to possess natural talent for teaching, but I think that’s true of most professions. What…

Individual learning plans...Is it the answer.

More then half of students in urban schools are below the level of proficiency in Math and Sciences. Students are part of a system : school (a Teacher) -student- Home ( parents). In that student centered system non proficient students do not read, do not listen, and do not do the home work. Is it an example of a social desease and is an individual learning plan a remedy in a class of 35 kids ?
