Report on the Classroom 2.0 LIVE Workshop in San Francisco

This past Friday and Saturday we held the first ever "Classroom 2.0

LIVE" workshop in San Francisco, California. I've been trying to make

as many notes as I can about this event because I think the format of a

collaboratively-built workshop around the topic of Web 2.0 in education

has such potential, and I am anxious to do more of these and to keep

improving them. I apologize in advance for the length of the post--for

those of you who are interested, the detail may… Continue

FreeRice.com: An Educational Game that's Philanthropic as Well!

One of my colleagues told me about FreeRice.com, a game that helps players to build vocabulary and donate rice to the UN at the same time.

Now I'm sure many are asking "How does it work?" It's actually very simple. Every vocabulary question that comes up has an accompanying ad below. Each time an ad is loaded, money is generated that is donated to providing rice to hungry people. I thought this was an ingenious idea and decided to add the site to a…

Made it back from the METC in St. Louis

Not bad in general .... surprised the content was still largely blogs, video, podcasts, social networks, voicethread etc. ... was hoping for a little more evolved discussion on live video streaming, 3D virtual environments, mechanima as collaborative/mashable digital story telling platform etc.

Maybe next year.

Interns from Korea working in Chicago create webquest and ning.com page

I continue to be inspired by the many ways technology is being discussed in Classroom 2.0, and hope that by my participation I'll inspire educators to use technology as part of service-learning projects, where students learn about problems in their community and the world, and use their web 2.0 technology and their classroom learning, to educate others in their community about specific issues, and about ways youth and adults can become involved in community problem solving.

In…

Spring08: blogging over at Fireside

I'd been hoping the ning magic would make it possible to post in both of the education nings that I follow, classroom2.0 here and fireside learning - I've been spending more time participating in discussions over at the fireside, so that's where I'll be blogging about the semester. So, no more crossposting here - but you can find me over at the fireside ning! :-)

Introduction

I'm an English teacher at Kanagawa Prefectural College of Foreign Studies in Yokohama, Japan and a member of LET, a group based in Japan for educators interested in using technology in language teaching. I write a column, called The Treasure Hunt, in LET's monthly newsletter. I am also helping LET to organize the 2008 WorldCALL 3 conference in Fukuoka, Japan in August. I am doing some pre-conference podcasts (mostly interviews with… Continue

Machinima (and story telling in the 21st century) - "virtual" Clay animation (without the clay or mess)

Machinima according to Wikipedia - Machinima (muh-sheen-eh-mah) is filmmaking within a real-time, 3-D virtual environment

What do a commercial for Toyota, TV programs such as CSI: New York and The Office, film festivals, and an organization that works with

urban youth all have in common? They are at the forefront of machinima,

a filmmaking genre that is helping to shape video for the 21st…

The eMINTS technology is arriving:)

The material for us to use with our eMINTS grant is beginning to arrive. The first item to make it to us as teachers were our new laptop computers. I'm excited to get students involved in the technology and collaboration available and encouraged through this grant and its associated training. Many of the other teachers have less experience with Web 2.0 and are beginning to ask me and others with more experience questions. It has been fun to share concepts of what can be done in the… Continue

Math-- Week of February 4-8

This week, we are learning how to add and subtract fractions. When we began this unit last week, many of the students struggled with this concept, so we are extending it for another week. Help from parents with homework would be greatly appreciated and helpful. =)

If some of you parents are like me, when I began teaching your children how to do this, I needed to study in order to refresh my memory. This website offers great tips on how to add and subtract fractions:… Continue

Click and view for charity

x-posted from Muse For Jews

I’m sure you’ve received emails telling you to go to such-and-such site to click to ensure that some corporation will donate money to breast cancer research, food for homeless pets, etc. Today I got one that read:

Friends & Family,

In an effort to raise money for research on autism, the band, Five for Fighting, is generously donating $0.40 to Autism Speaks for *each time* the video…

Teacher Tube

Last week I attended the MECA (Mississippi Educaitonal Computing Association) conference in Jackson. I had an amazing time and got to speak with a lot of educators about using technology in the classroom. To my alarm, no one I spoke to know about Teacher Tube! I explained that it was basically an equivalent to YouTube with educational material perfect for the classroom. Of course, many of the initial reactions were "Oh I'm sure thats blocked too" or from tech coordinators "Well, I know we…

Graduate Work

Started the jouney of instructional technology graduate study this past week. This is my first on-line course and so far I'm enjoying it. Since I've been coming to this site and others to discuss and collaborate, I've already done much of what I'll be doing in my first class. My experiences on-line I feel have helped me greatly. Reading blogs in my aggregator and posting to discussions has really primed me for what is expected in this class. At the moment I feel as if I'm in cruise control and… Continue

Sophomores and their "Nation of Afrcia"

The People’s Republic of California doesn’t require freshman-level history or social science. Therefore, our district doesn’t teach it.

In its place is a yearlong freshman health class — think “Communicable Diseases and You” — split with a seminar on how to succeed as a high school student. State-mandated and standards-driven, this approach looks good on paper.

The irony of the freshman seminar is that despite the adoption of the high school success class, the post-freshman…

Pink: Great point. I think we need a lot more “yes, but” teaching. You’ve also made a very strong and compelling argument that what might

be most important is learning how to learn. How can schools equip more

kids with this…

2008.... the future looks bright

Looking forward to getting to terms with my revamped role, taking on more curriculum challenges and working to really embed some of the web 2.0 stuff I have learned about in not only my every day teaching, but by supporting other staff in a coaching role...

can't wait....

starting with working with a great team....

gotta work on getting the technology reliable enough so that the hard to convince staff can see the benefits...

hmmmm.... how will I play with the…
