Teaching in the Digital Age is exciting. Finding new ways to teach, connect, and help students grow is a challenge we, as educators, are starting to realize. Collaborating and networking are becoming essential skills for educators.
In the article, “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants” by Marc Prensky, I learned that I am a digital immigrant. I did not grow up immersed in technology. I do think, as an immigrant, I have been adapting pretty well. Immigrants are pretty accepting of…

The two videos that were shared were really meaningful to me because I had Professor Wesch as my Cultural Anthropology Professor at K-State. While my class wasn’t featured on the video, I knew many of the people that participated. I really recommend anyone that attends K-State to take a class from him. He really practices what he preaches in the video!
I am considered a “Digital Native.” However, I feel conflicted in this comparison. My teachers were all “Digital Immigrants” and I…

This week in Digital Age Classrooms, we were asked to read several articles and watch videos about "Teaching in the Digital Age." This information has intrigued me ever since I took my first graduate class, Issues and Ethics in Technology. Over the past few days I have learned valuable information that has challenged my original thoughts on this stimulating educational topic.
The video "The Machine is Using Us" emphasized that the web is not just linking information, but is…

As a phys. ed. instructor, I found this webinar to be surprisingly useful, and also reinforcing the importance of what I do with kids on a daily basis. Knowing that movement helps the brain compliments "whole child" education. I remember a t-shirt I had once that said "Learn to Move, Move to Learn" on the front. How true this is still proving to be. I was amazed at the attention span formula of age plus 2 minutes, and the fact that this peaks at age 25. Now I know why I can't remember…

I really enjoyed the 2 videos and the articles. They made me reflect on how and what we are teaching our students. If we are truly preparing them for their future then we have to find ways to make their learning and our teaching methods relevant to them. It comes down to what is best for students, not what is easiest or comfortable for teachers. As teachers we have to continue to learn and grow right along with our students. It does bother me a little that today's kids are spending so…

Here's a sure sign that you don't fully understand AFL and how AFL practices will lead to your goal of helping students learn the content you teach:
You teach a primarily fact-based class or are currently teaching fact-based content - such as History, Biology, or Health - and the first time that your students are assessed/quizzed/tested/etc on facts it's on…

Innovation and modernization has brought about a Saree Revolution in the fashion world. Saree is a female clothing accessory that was developed and became popular in India. It started when an Indus Valley priest wore a drape like clothing in the early days. Since then, Indian women were seen wearing a single piece of fabric while the top part of the body is partially exposed.
The saree is a special kind of fabric about 6 to 9 yards long, enough to wrap around the woman's body…

I am definitely a digital immigrant at work, but I feel that considering my age, I do a decent job of trying to embrace and use technology. I laughed out loud when the article mentioned teachers that print out emails because we have several teachers in my building that do that. I do still print out papers to edit and to read because I find this easier than working or reading long articles on the computer. My grandson can already use my phone to take pictures and he is only 14 months old. …

I found the reading on Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives to be the most engaging this week. I feel like I am stuck somewhere in between, like the first native generation born of immigrant parents. True, I had computers at school when I was growing up. However, the most notable thing I recall doing on these computers was conquering dysentary on the Oregon Trail. What did my adventures on the Oregon Trail teach me? That trying to stare at that horrible green and black computer screen…

The videos were interesting to watch. They had facts about students and their technology use vs. actual reading. I really enjoyed reading the article. After reading the article, I would have to say that I am a digital native. I am on who chooses to go to the internet for any information, whether is be news, shopping or how to for anything. I am comfortable using internet, game stations, videos, etc. I was able to relate to many of the digital native characteristics. "What does…

I am working to better understand technology in the classroom. I know that it is important and can help students learn but I still struggle to use it effectively. I had previously viewed most of the material presented and still struggle to understand how to make use of the technologies that exist.
My issue is not accepting that they are important but instead figuring out how to make the best use of them. I have blogs for my classes but do not use them…

One of the most beautiful things about having a child is how it reconnects you with your own childhood. Over the holidays, with Georgina spending more time at my mother's place, her grandmother went scurrying into the bedroom and dug out some of my old books so I could read them to my daughter. One that caught my eye was one I have vivid memories of, 'Fish is Fish'. The illustration above particularly sticks in my mind.
The storyline goes along the lines of two…
