10 videos that WILL ignite a discussion - Part 3

If you didn't know, I really enjoy watching short videos. In particular, I really enjoy watching videos that get me thinking and reflecting on my educational practices and beliefs. I have been using short videos in Professional Development sessions to get educators at my high school talking and discussing issues related to education. This is the third installment of the series..."videos that WILL ignite a discussion." I encourage you to check out…

Teaching technique – teach them how to learn part 2

Teaching technique – teach them how to learn part 2

When my students entered the classroom (the first day of classes) I told them,”welcome to biology class”. I quickly inform them that they will learn biology (Failure was not an option). I explained that the focus of the class would be how to learn. I explained that it would be as if I am teaching you how to drive a car. The car is biology. The car is not important-How to drive is important. I am going to teach you how to learn. I am… Continue

Visual Incapacity and the potential of ICT in References Schools

After reading the excellent post by Miguel Monteiro, reveling the most positive side of the use of supportive technologies in peoples disability’s daily life - I couldn’t stop wondering how urgent must be the increment on the access to those digital devices, in every  Reference School, from students whit lack of vision

It´s a fact, while since their appearance in the years 90, the technologies of Information and communication (ICT), assumed immediately a total domain in…

The continuing quest to be a better teacher

I remember when I joined the university about 17 years ago (it feels like only yesterday!) I was given the task of handling a laboratory class. I already had some experiences as a graduate assistant during my time as a Ph.D. student so it was not very difficult. I think I did quite a good job designing new experiments, interacting with the students and helping them with the experiment and marking the lab report. During the first few months, I had to attend induction courses including one or…

School technology is just like soccer

Up until a few days ago I would have said that my endeavors in the world of soccer and my work in school technology have almost nothing in common. Then I started to think about that. It’s an odd thought I admit; what does soccer have in common with school technology? But there it was, stuck in my head, waiting for me to devote precious brain cells to its analyses.

On the one hand soccer is this demanding activity that flashed into the American scene in the late 70’s.

Trying to follow… Continue

The gift of HOPE

At the Freshman Transition Network we are always trying to find resources that can be used in the classroom to motivate and inspire kids.  This video is one such resource.

Your students need to see this.  After they watch it, take an opportunity to talk about how they treat their fellow man.  Talk to them about Love and Forgiveness and Humility.  Take a moment to talk about judging others and the treating…

Considering a Technology Plan

Some thoughts on the National Education Technology Plan:

“The challenge for our education system is to leverage the learning sciences and modern technology to create engaging, relevant, and personalized learning experiences for all learners that mirror students’ daily lives and the reality of their futures.  In contrast to traditional classroom instruction, this requires that we put students at the center and empower them to take control of their own learning by providing…

6 Ways to use Pen.io

Last Friday, I ran across a blog post on Free Tech for Teachers about an app called Pen.io. I started to mess around with the app and was blown away by how easy it was. Using Pen.io, I posted a document to the web about as quick as I could cut and paste the text. Within a few minutes, I had what was formerly a word document published with it’s own…

Do You Think University Should be Free? Then Meet Shai Reshef of University of the People

Original post

I discovered the University of the People a couple of months ago and right away its mission really intrigued me. The concept is both simple and revolutionary – to create a university which is tuition free. In today’s world of rising education costs and student debt escalating out of control, this seemed like an alternative worth exploring. The concept is…

What options exist for teachers who want to try using a Course Management System, but don’t have one available in their school? Technology that Supports Teaching and Learning

So (full disclosure), I'm currently going through the NETS*T process, and one of our requirements is that we share at least three examples of technology we use to support teaching and learning to share with our colleagues.  Here, then, is my post (thanks for reading!):

One of my favorite technology tools is my messageboard, set up through proboards (sorry, you can't access it: it's password protected).  It has proven to be useful for a variety of purposes.  It began as a way…

Students understanding the value of assessment - nice to see!

This was originally posted on Assessment FOR Learning.

Recently I spent a few minutes in the classroom of SHS Marketing teacher Michelle Kovac.  Her Marketing students had just turned in projects that day.

When I came into the class the students were in the process of evaluating similar projects turned in by last year's students.  Mrs. Kovac had given her students a rubric when they…
