My lesson plan and Bloom's Revised and Digital Bloom's Taxonomy

While researching the differences between Bloom's Revised Taxonomy and Digital Bloom's Taxonomy, I first thought of my lesson plan on "Re-cancellations."

As background, I teach employees how to make specific changes to health insurance policies.  When coverage under a policy is no longer needed, a cancellation is processed and unused premium is refunded to the insured.  Sometimes a refund is sent to the insured and later a payment the insured made for coverage is returned as…

Is Podcasting Dead?

It seems that at least for my group of sixth graders, it certainly is.  Several are very avid Youtube users and even those students not direclty uploading to Youtube certainly show a keen interest in what the others are doing.  Recently, a student (one of the avid Youtubers) suggested that we watch a fun science clip by Charlie McDonnel on Youtube.  We did, and the students as well as I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Without the video, the same fun science clip would not have been as effective.  Does… Continue

The old, compartmentalized approach to learning

The past 21 years, I have taught about half of the subjects covered in most public schools:  French, humanities, English, mythology, creative writing, math, physics--you get the picture.  Maybe this is why I've always been disappointed to see the way that most public schools compartmentalize learning.  Why don't we do things like integrate math, writing, physics, art history, and aesthetic design as students replicate Leonardo da Vinci machines and inventions?  Most likely, this is because…

The non-techie issue

Problem number one with trying to be technologically awesome is that I didn't know the difference between a Mac and a PC until last year, which I think can help all of you understand how well I know my way around listservs, blogs, and social networking sites.  The biggest struggle for me throughout this process has not been learning how to use so many new devices and resources but…

The enduring allure of talking about yourself

Using Classroom 2.0's profile I'm reminded of why Facebook and Google+ hold such attraction for people. It's essentially an advertising board for yourself and everything you're interested in. It allows you to collect all the things that catch your interest throughout the day when no one else is there to see it with you then make sure your friends and acquaintances have a chance to be in on it too. Given that kids and teenagers especially love talk about themselves, schools are…

Lesson Ideas for Social Studies and Technology Integration

Fortunately for social studies teachers, many aspects of study in the content areas lend themselves to technology integration. Whether it be researching and creating spreadsheets with data, generating graphs or charts, or creating Web scavenger hunts, ideas abound for using technology in your social studies class today. Using your standards as a guide, modify any of the following ideas to fit your curriculum goals.…

My philosophy of education

http://youtu.be/O5UKTeUxakw

My own philosophy of education relies on being eclectic.  My philosophy of education takes elements of TRPS (Teaching Proficiency through reading and story telling) Dr. Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences. I love combining different teaching methods. Specifically, I love combing the Grammar Translation Method, that is based on having students translate texts based on grammar rules, The Direct…

Exploring New Social Networks

Honestly, I have never heard of Ning.  I can understand the usefulness as far as networking and learning from peers.  But, it may take me awhile to become a regular user.  I have been a Facebook user for many years and it is a habit to "check my page" several times a day.  Could Ning become as addictive?  Maybe...

New to Classroom 2.0

I am new to Classroom 2.0. This is my first time signing up and I think it is an excellent tool to find resources and ideas. I've already had some time to quickly browse a few blogs, member pages and groups. It is great to have this bank of resources easily accessible and well organized. The process of setting up my own account and page went smoothly. There was just some basic information to add and the next step is to find colleagues. I still have some formating to do and some color to add,… Continue

Social Networking in the Classroom

Our students have actually been far ahead of us as teachers in the world of social networking. A powerful tool that creates instant connection and access to resources from all over the world, social networking has long been in the hands of our students. Since schools have been slow to embrace social networking, students took to self teaching themselves about this new technology. Unfortunately, the majority of students taught themselves to utilize social networking for social and…

Great Educational Podcasts for 2nd Grade

We try utilizing some of these podcasts in my 2nd grade classroom.  Some of them are used as a whole class, and then others are used on individual student laptops or iPods.

My experience with classroom 2.0

It seemed fairly simple to sign up for the classroom 2.0 site that I can use to collaborate. The hardest part was waiting for approval. I haven't done much to my page yet, but changing the look of my page was very simple. There has been little that takes more than a couple of clicks to change. Navigation seems fairly easy, though the first page has a lot to look through. Adding my picture took just a minute. It seems to be very user friendly.
