The Uncertainty of Knowledge

“There is only one thing about which I am certain, and that is that there is very little about which one can be certain.” (W. Somerset Maugham).

To me this is very powerful statement that stretches across all of the areas of philosophy. For this response I am going to focus on epistemology. What W. Somerset Maugham is saying is that there are things that we may believe to be true, but then we find out that what we believed may not be true. To me this is very powerful. First…

Using The iPad As A Digital Whiteboard (Plus 4 Cool Free Apps To Use To Try It Out)

There are some nice free Digital Whiteboards apps available for the iPad. Free rocks.

I found myself wondering how the iPad might work as a Digital Whiteboard, to project, as well as to use collaboratively. I also wondered if there might be some free apps that provide this kind of functionality (there are so many decent free apps for the iPad).

First step, hit the App…

International

Perhaps if you read this blog, you might think I'm a workaholic with nothing more on my mind than teaching, ICT, and the mathematics progression points. You'd be wrong. I have many interests, but none more pervasive than my love of travel.

My love of travel began by realising that not everyone has my ethnic heritage. On this blog, I have mentioned my Italian connections, but on my mother's side, my ancestry is Serbian. This is a more subtle influence on my life, visible only through… Continue

"T - 2": Preparing for the Extra Duties

At "T minus 2", I begin sifting through the calendars and emails about upcoming meetings, lunch duty schedules, curriculum planning updates, and more.

As I enter dates into my plan book and Google calendar, I remember the year that I was a substitute teacher. I arrived at 7:30 and left at 3:30 with all papers graded, plans for the next day solidified, and specific anecdotal notes on the progress of each child. I often wondered, Why is it that, when I teach full time, I stay until… Continue

Mobile Applications Versus Mobile Web Sites In Education

The future of mobile development is a strong one. The question these days is..."Is it better to build a mobile website or a mobile app"? Will new and developing browser technologies like… Continue

"T - 3": Zooming in and Zooming Out of Teacher Meetings

Students arrive in three working days.

The only thing I want to do is work in my classroom. But there are meetings. Obligatory attendance. Would admin know if I skipped?

I admit these feelings as a trained administrator, knowing the importance of the pre-service meetings. If I were to write objectives for the meetings we have had, they would be as follows:

  • Build a positive school-wide and divisional culture
  • Inform both veteran and incoming…

Newbie hoping I will have access at work

Almost every year I use my summer to try to find something new to incorporate into my classroom--some years more successfully than others. This year I am hoping to add to my toolbox with some new web 2.0 skills that I can use with my students to make me more effective and more able to capture the interest of our digital natives. As always I fear the site will be blocked by my district, but I will keep my fingers crossed and let you know when I get back to school next week.

Short Story on The Future of Holographic Teaching Technologies for the Classrom

Stan was a high-school French teacher, he liked to teach, and he was good at it, he'd better be after nearly 15-years. Thankfully, he'd been a teacher that long, as even teachers with 10-12 year tenure had been laid off recently with all the budget cuts, scary stuff. Luckily, he was still working, because he had a daughter who'd cost him a pretty penny in the next 4-6 years. Yes, he enjoyed the world of education, but he also liked being a father, but was…

Sometimes school is stupid

Every now and then, we all have “one of those days”. They usually start out bad and go downhill from there.   Mine usually start off without an alarm to wake me. My high-tech radio has an in-built compassion circuit - whenever it senses that I am tired enough to really need a wake-up call, it very kindly refrains…

"T - 4": Thinking Through Organization of Students and Their Supplies

Once the bigger pieces of furniture are in order, I begin working on the finer details. Specifically, I ask myself What processes can I put into place the will expedite student movement from one activity to another?

Teaching time is precious. If students take more than a minute or two to transition from one activity to another, a teacher can lose hours of important instructional… Continue

Training leadership on PBL

Two weeks ago, I was asked by my Superintendent to work with our leadership team (principals and educational services) to train them specifically on PBL, but also on 21st century learning, 1-1, and individualized instruction...

It's encouraging to have a Superintendent who gets that we need to walk the talk, and wants us to have a game plan.

I've had two hours with them so far. During our time, they've set a few goals for how to bring it back to their…

Before the Students Arrive ("T Minus 5")

Today was "T Minus 5". Students arrive in five working days.

Two feelings: chatty and overwhelmed.

Importance of Chat

Each school year begins with faculty and staff assemblies. I look over a sea of roughly 300 people, about a third of whom I know fairly well. I want to hear about their summers. I want them to expand on their Facebook updates - all the fun stories they didn't post.

I think the importance of beginning-of-year chat is…

Seton Hill University’s iPad rollout – more insights from a model implementation

Follow up to last month’s article on Seton Hill’s well planned iPad rollout.

Mathematics education - dire or inspire?

Maths education – dire or inspire?

You could see the panic in their faces - and then the relief.

They were students in their final year of high school on a visit to campus to explore the possibility of “going to uni” after they finished their compulsory schooling. I had, perhaps perversely, set up an experiment. I had told them that two of them would find a red dot under their seat - and if they were one of these people they would come forward and participate in a simple… Continue
