5 things we can learn from our four-legged friends...

My wife and I have been married for a little under three years, and about a year ago we decided that we wanted

to grow our family. As we discussed the most typical way of growing a

family (a baby), we came to the conclusion that we should start small

before taking the big leap. Last summer we purchased an 8 pound, runt

of the litter, slightly discolored, adorable, and loving yellow lab

puppy.…

K-12 needs Internet Filter Flexibility.

While most US corporations turn on Web filtering to control content and reduce their liability exposure, K-12 has different needs. We are now planning a RBAC, (Role based Access Controls) project for our web filter. This will allow us to remain CIPA compliant for all students, (Child Internet Protection Act) yet still offer the much needed access to our… Continue

SchoolTool and other Parent Portals in K-12 Education

Parent Portals are gradually becoming an invaluable part of the K-12 education application environment.

I’ve just had my first hands-on introduction to Parent Portals. I live in the Wappingers Falls school district in New York state, and they’ve just launched the SchoolTool parent portal. I love this idea and I’m delighted to see it taking root here.

In today’s feature post we’ll examine some of the features these…

Biology Educators Network Gains Partnership

A couple of years ago a few of my digital friends and I brought this space to life: The Synapse. A week later I wrote about it here. The site derives its origin directly from a frustrating discussion in the Twittersphere between biology… Continue

TEDxRedmond - Priya Ganesan - Creativity in School

TEDxRedmond is "by kids, for kids" with a theme of "Power to the Students." With over four hundred youth attendees watching in the all-youth theater, this was one of the largest TEDx events entirely for youth. Organized by an all-youth committee headed by former TED speaker Adora Svitak, TEDxRedmond focused on issues (like education) pertaining to youth as well as adults.

Priya Ganesan is a teenage poet, book reviewer,…

Practical Examples of AFL to Try in Your Classroom

This was originally posted on Assessment FOR Learning.

Assessment FOR Learning has grown to the point where that it now contains many different examples of how AFL can be practiced in a classroom. These ideas are scattered throughout the site. To make this site easier to navigate, this one blog will include links to all of the other classroom AFL examples. It's sort of like an AFL Wal-Mart -… Continue

The power of "hello" and "goodbye"

Every Friday morning I have the opportunity to see and greet almost every single student at my high school. The high school at which I work

has a little more than 1,800 students, and as I stand their doing my

duty I can't help but think how amazing it is that this process goes as

smoothly as it does. It is my personal goal to say "good morning" to

every student I have, have had, and potentially expect to have. The

typical… Continue

#1 series in teaching

It has now been a year since I first started the #1 series. A catalog of what I believe is important in teaching and particularly ELT. See it below, share, download.

Here it is faithfully edited, updated and relinked, facelifted. Lots of stuff that might remain as important reference.

Download a hardcopy to print, carry around, use as toilet paper and win paper airplane contests… Continue

You are only a guru when you are more than 50 miles from home.

Have you ever sat through a professional development session thinking, "This guy has no clue what happens in the classroom?" Lately, that's the only thought I've had in our pd sessions. I've listened to administrator after administrator tell me how to do things. What do they know about being in my classroom? Well, I finally got a break from administrators telling me how to do things in yesterday's pd session. Two pairs of teachers presented our staff of 21. As the first pair started, I thought,… Continue

Job Satisfaction - The Key to Motivating our Children?

One of the things that most of us strike as parents - or teachers - at some stage or another, is finding a way to motivate our children in one particular area or another.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been spending a lot of time meeting and speaking to homeschool families as we have been promoting the benefits of our online subtitled… Continue

5 Examples of Improved Approaches to Assessment (from the 2010 NETP draft)

The 2010 National Education Technology Plan draft provides some great examples of formative uses of technology-based assessment tools.

I’ve been reading the 2010 National Education Technology Plan draft and I really appreciate the wealth of ideas and examples in it. I do wonder how much of what is proposed in this document will…

Offering home web filtering solution info to parents

As we all know there are two very distinct sides to the Internet - on the one side we share and enjoy postings and links to sites much like this one (where the best of what we can offer shines through), and there is the dark side of porn, nudity, phishing, filth and hate that we need to protect our youth from. In the El Paso ISD (TX) I've started a small campaign with principals and PTA folks offering a presentation about OpenDNS, a filtering system that is… Continue
