Why use iPads in Education?

Original blog post here

Why use iPads in K12 Education?

To be successful when using technology in education one should focus on learning, engagement, creativity, inquiry-based learning, and differentiated instruction over the technology tools used to amplify learning. I believe that IPad’s and other digital…

Teaching the Digital

Our students are digital learners and thinkers. Teachers should realize this and accommodate and update. There are plentiful resources out there so there should be no excuses. You can blog, glog, wiki, Facebook, use an I pad/IPod, ect. After reading the article, it really opened my eyes to how our children are learning. It really is a serious issue in our schools. I think that if we can incorporate technology into our…

Digital Age Classrooms

Times have definitely changed in the way teachers teach, and the ways children learn. I found these videos and articles were very interesting. I am not that old, but times have even changed from when I was in school to now, and the way I teach. I thought the language in which we all speak, or the slang that we use was interesting. I found it interesting that often times we cannot understand the students, and they cannot understand our lingo.

When trying to think if I was a digital…

The American Dream

Years ago, my good friend and colleague, Ray Moore, attended an AVID conference in San Diego.  He tells me that at the conference he heard the superintendent of San Diego City Schools state the following:

Teaching in the Digital Age

Although I am definitely a digital immigrant, as I went through school the transition from typewriters to computers was complete.  I can remember when I applied for a summer job that required typing 40 words per minute (which should have been no problem as I was typing nearly 60 in my high school computer class).  The frustration was that when I arrived for the typing test it was given on a typewriter.  Just the feel of the keystrokes and the awkwardness of the machine was enough that I was…

Can Music Heal? Piano Teacher Edward Weiss says ... Yes!

Music … it has so many therapeutic uses. From a soothing background in hospitals to a relaxing ambiance in restaurants.

But the use of music as a healing agent isn’t anything new. It’s been around since people started making music thousands of years ago.

And now, pianist and teacher Edward Weiss wants to spread that message.

Weiss owns and operates… Continue

Virtual Desktops – an Exciting Emerging Technology Platform for Academic Computing

With virtual server technology gradually becoming mainstream, the next big leap is the virtual desktop.

Many academic institutions are getting on board with the use of virtual server technology, and I’m proud to say that The College of Westchester is no exception (more on that in a minute). Right behind the implementation of virtual servers is the next big leap in virtual computing technologies – the virtual…

Schmoker: Focus and teaching English Language Arts

Mike Schmoker’s new text Focus (2011) offers a passionate, persuasive call for a return to some old-school methods of teaching, especially with regard to the teaching of English. As a teacher at a school that is moving (finally) to a 1:1 computer environment, the risk is that we could forego much of the reading and writing we do in favour of more ‘creative projects’. What Schmoker calls for is simple: plenty of reading. He suggests that in each English course, students should…

The Shallows

Nicholas Carr's latest, erudite work The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains is well worth reading. In particular, I would recommend the chapter "The Juggler's Brain" which does an excellent job of compiling and refuting such notions as multi-tasking. He refutes well the contention of Everything Bad Is Good for You (Johnson, 2005). With connections to work on working memory (cf. Alloway, Tracy) and suggestions as to how technology, when not used with circumspection, can change… Continue

On Donald Runsfeld, tuning TVs...and face to face learning.

I’m a fan of online learning and learning via the Internet.   The treasury of knowledge that resides in “the cloud” magically captured and reproduced via a series of “1” and “0” is simply staggering.  Despite a lifetime of reverence to the printed page I have become an enthusiastic user of electronic learning. If you know what you are looking for and know how to ask the right… Continue

The Pre-Test: A simple but EFFECTIVE AFL strategy

This was originally posted on Assessment FOR Learning.

My daughter's 7th grade English teacher at Andrew Lewis Middle School uses a time-tested easy-to-apply simple AFL strategy that motivates my daughter to work, helps her to learn, and ensures that her grade is an accurate reflection of that learning.

Every Monday the students are given a pre-test on that week's spelling words.  If the student spells 100% of…
