Computer Assisted Language Learning in Arizona

I will be moving to Arizona to teach at ASU in the American English and Culture Program. I am really happy about going back to live in a place where the sun shines everyday. As I sit here in a very dark and gloomy Kalamazoo, Mi.

I have been using computers in the classroom for a while and I am always looking for people to share new ideas with me. While living here in Michigan I discovered the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning. This organization…

What Are the Relationships Among Standards, Assessments, and the Structure of Content? by Ruby L. Payne, Ph.D

In order for teachers to understand the content they are teaching, they need to understand that there are basic units of the subject matter that are built upon. These basic units are the building blocks of the content which over time are linked into a greater understanding of what is being taught. Dr. Payne breaks content into the "what", the "why" and the "how". She states that too often, teachers spend too much time on the "what" and not enough time on the "why". As a math teacher, I find…

Collaborative Creative Storytelling on a Microsoft Surface: The TellTable

Here is a link to a video and blog post about the TellTable application, created for the Surface by Microsoft Research (UK). The TellTable was located in a primary school's library and was a great hit. I wish every school library/media center could have one!

TellTable: Collaborative Creative Storytelling on a Multi-touch Table, from Microsoft Research,…

Facebook's OpenGraph brings up more privacy & security issues. (Link to blog post with videos from the recent f8 conference.)

My recent post on the Interactive Multimedia Technology blog contains videos from the recent Facebook f8 conference, targeted primarily for developers. It is worth watching the videos, as you'll see that the next transformation of the web will also bring up additional privacy & security concerns that we all need to know about.

Wrapping my head around f8…

CRCT

Thank God the test is over! I LOVE teaching more than anything and I feel as I am an effective teacher, so why does it stress me out so badly? I don't stress about it weeks before like some do, but the week OF??? Oh my gosh, I am a wreck. This year was worse than the previous years though. I think the lower the students in the class, the harder I work, and the less evidence is shown in the end. One child that I was very worried about tried so hard. I was proud of her, but one little boy... I… Continue

Adapting the Four Blocks Literacy Model to the 52 Minute Class Period

This year, I formatted my language arts class based on a modified Four Blocks Literacy Model in attempts to create a balanced literacy program that meets the diverse needs of all my students. Although the true four blocks model takes place in a single block class session, I am forced to teach my blocks throughout the week within 52 minute class periods. In a typical week…

Seat Pockets

With the help of my mother-in-law's superb sewing skills, I created seat pockets for each student desk in my classroom. I have five rows with five student desks in each row labeled with a number and a letter A1-A5, B1-B5, C1-C5, D1-D5, and E1-E5. I gave each row a different color seat pocket. I've found that this is an efficient way to form collaborative groups based on any data (MAP scores, high-low reading levels, personality, etc). All the kids know is that they are in the purple group…

Student Feedback

I have an area on a wall in my classroom I call the "Parking Lot." It's a place where students can "park" their ideas, concerns, or questions about my language arts class. Here are some of the student responses from my 8th graders currently in the lot:

  • Can we arrange our desks in a big circle?…

Est

A new term, a new inquiry topic, and a whole bunch of new opportunities to use technology have presented themselves at Castlemaine North PS.

Our inquiry topic this term is “Who and what have shaped Australia’s identity?” Somehow, I stumbled on the ABC 3 series “My Place”, which consists of 13 episodes set 10 years apart, from 1888 all the way to 2008. Each episode has a story about a 10 year old child who has been shaped by the preceding 10 years’ history. As well as the DVDs, there… Continue

6 Free Online Interactive White Boards

An update to last April’s post about free web-based IWBs.

Last April, I wrote a post about a few Online Interactive Whiteboards that I had checked out. That post remains one of my most popular posts, so obviously this is a topic of interest to a lot of people.

I figured it was time for an update, to check out new tools, and to see if there…

Differentiating Instruction in the Regular Classroom

Differentiating Instruction in the Regular Classroom by Diane Heacox is an excellent guide for all teachers. DI is a method of teaching all teachers should try to adapt in the classroom since every student learns differently. This book gives you templates and step by step instructions how to implement some of the practices into the room. DI at first seems unorganized and frustrating because many students are doing various activities based on their learning style and academic ability but once… Continue

21st Century Videos

The videos we watched for Computers in the Classroom showed me that today's students feel disconnected from and isolated within their own learning. I think as administrators and teachers become bogged down in "teaching to the test" in order to maintain passing rates or to score high on those tests, students become lost in a curriculum that is uneventful and meaningless.

Teachers and instructors need to find ways to engage their students. They need to make learning more…

Social Dilemmas

Chapter 8 addresses the use of technology and social media tools to solve social dilemmas. Given my field, the title caught my eye, especially the section entitled, "Self Help We Don't Approve Of." It goes on to described an online bulletin board set up by a teen magazine to talk about subjects important to teen girls. Eventually the magazine shut down the bulletin board because a group of girls were swapping tips on being anorexic. Although the bulletin board was successful and useful to…
