Merit-based pay an Obama inititiative

I just read this article from edweek that discusses President Obama's educational intitiatives. Certainly merit-based pay is something many of us dedicated, motivated educators get excited about, but I think the devil is in the details here...Of course I want to make more money and have my work recognized, but I have trouble seeing how this type of program would work. What criteria will be… Continue

Classroom 2.0 on PalmBreezeCAFE

PalmBreezeCAFE is our school district's EdTech TV show. We broadcast on local cable and post on YouTube as well as other social video sharing sites. On last week's segment of PalmBreezeCAFE, I showed how to "roll your own" social network with Ning. Classroom 2.0 was used as an example. I've already received nice feedback from folks who are enjoying it. Feedback is welcome and If you have any ideas for future… Continue

A sample poem to depict a daily life of sav students

My day as a student

Wake up at six

Wash hands and face,

Drink a cup of tea

And play with the mess.

When sun comes up

Mom calls for meal

Have rice with soup

Then run to school.

School is temple

Wisdom is praised,

Teachers are respected

For their aid.

School bell rings

Assemble in the ground,

Pray for the good day

Polite, happy and sound.

Learn many subjects

Languages,… Continue

What They Want

I have only been able to ask one parent and one student what they would be looking for if I were to create a website for the students I tutor. The student, who was not feeling well, simply said, "I don't know". Even if she were feeling well, I'm not sure she would have given me much more input. Her mother, on the other hand gave me LOTS of input. To begin with, she told me that she would like to see pictures and tidbits about the other students I tutor. She said it would be interesting to see… Continue

With so much knowledge, how do you sort through it and share it with your students, peers, parents and community?

I've browsed the 200 pages of introductions over the past year and it's amazing all of the great ideas that are here. I share some of these on my own Tutor/Mentor Connection web site so that volunteers and students in non-school tutor/mentor programs might use these just as often, or perhaps more often, than do kids in inner city schools.

New Liberal Arts

One of the conversations developing in cyberspace is the need to address "the new liberal arts", what it is to be socially, culturally, spiritually aware in the 21st century. As I have tried to follow this dialogue I have begun to sense the very strong need by young people for relevance. Young people spend vast portions of their lives in places that don't exist, but yet do. In these places they are not constrained by physics as we know them, nor by the need for mutual self interest. Part of… Continue

Take your pick of innovative ideas at Wisconsin education conference: Project Based learning, digital technology, games and learning, and more . . .

Interested in any of the following mini conferences near Milwaukee on April 20 and 21st?

(Number 2 seems interesting to me.)

The Wisconsin Charter Schools Association is hosting their annual conference in Waukesha at the Country Springs Hotel (about 20 minutes west of Milwaukee). I have to say, they have put together a pretty interesting conference, and they promise that all the sessions will be interactive.
