I've been teaching an online course for my graduate school alma mater for the past several semesters. So far, each semester has been 14 weeks long, with four of the sessions being face-to-face and the other 10 sessions being conducted through a course homepage provided by the school. I've been trying to brainstorm ways to keep the class on-track for covering all the material required, but making the best use of the online format.
Now I'm teaching a shorter summer version of the…

Developing curricula that reflects the usage of social networks for building exposure, image and contribute to performance will set the stage for life-long learning. Additionally, for those that have had no contact with computers, developing content and effective on-line navigation will be the result on working with social networks as a vehicle for skills development. I’m thinking the basic curriculum would be as follows: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, MS FrontPage, Introduction…

Study: Social networks may subvert 'digital divide'
Social networks like Facebook and MySpace have reputations as time-sucking procrastination tools, but a new study from the University of Minnesota says au contraire.
Social networks build beneficial technological, creative, and communication skills, the study says, leading the researchers to actually describe social networks with the adjective "educational." Who knew?
"What we found was that students using…

It's only mid-June and I have already attended an international train-the-trainer event (held in the U.S.), presented at a tech conference, and am eagerly anticipating my state's big tech conference next week. I'll be facilitating some online and face-to-face trainings this fall so I'm preparing for those. And oh yes, I'm looking forward to teaching in my own air-conditioned classroom!
As you can see, I am totally pumped very enthused about the coming year and all that I hope my…

I wrote recently to a couple of the higher-ups in my district to ask about next year's 21st Century Learning plans and directions because I had heard nothing since the first and only mention of it (within my hearing) last April. You already know about that Summit if you've been reading my blog.
The back-story is that I have not been able to get anyone from the district to provide me with any kind of mission or goal statement about educational technology for at least two years because…

I have spent many hours trying to develop my technology skills to enhance my abilities as a teacher. However, it always seems to be a problem actually implementing the technology into my assignments due to the fact I have several students who still do not have access to the technology outside of the classroom. This is often a reflection of the students economical status within the community and creates a myriad of other issues for me to deal with. It affects the students self-esteem, the…

Where are you starting your journey with PBL? I’m already excited about PBL and have done parts of it before; never in a formal sense that included all the usual steps. I think many elementary-trained teachers do this instinctively but it is more rare to think like that at the junior high level. In the era of true “middle school” there was a lot more teaching with integrated units & projects, so although that’s sort of gone away in the era of high-stakes testing (at least around here), I’ve…
