Hot, Cool, and Very Controversial

A HOT topic where I am is integrating technology! HOT in many ways...including COOL and controversial. I just read a forum asking how to get teachers to join us in our exciting endeavors of integrating. I began a reply and ....so much of the past week's frustration came out and in the end I thought I resolved myself to live and let live. More on that in a minute. I cut and pasted my reply here…

Home from NavCon2k7

I've just come home from the NavCon2k7 conference in Gosford, NSW, and had to start playing on my laptop straight away. I have explored so many Web 2.0 tools that should not only inspire my students but also the teachers in my school.

I'm really keen to try out rafi.ki with my Grade 4 class. We are learning about our environment, with a particular reference to droughts and global warming. It would be great for the kids to exchange ideas, stories and pictures about their environment… Continue

Is it worth the rant?

Like many of you, I occasionally do a little ranting when it comes to the

problems with some of the things that go on with the technology in

schools and the level of availability of different websites. I've also

been known to rant every now and then about other things that go on

with schools and learning.

Well, this isn't one of those. In fact, over the past few weeks,… Continue

Open Source in Education

As a Director of Technology I have to wear many hats and maintain a limited budget. So, I am always looking for ways to get educational based applications that are educational based and provide higher level order of thinking challenges. Well, one weekend I spent time searching for open source software and came across the article I have uploaded. It provides open source software for PCs, Apples, and Linux OS systems. I have read through the 77 pages and downloaded several recommended…

This was taken from Rich White's page, it is worth sharing.

This was taken from Rich White's page, it is worth sharing! We had this exact conversation during class on Weds night. I suspect this conversation, with the coming of Web 2.0 is going to become very common.
"Realized a while back - the only people school firewalls keep away from resources are the teachers - students know of every proxy server on the…

October 5, 2007

Friday, good old Fridays. I was more than happy to see the weekend come. It was defintily a stressful week as per the class had been reviewing how to write an effective introductary paragraph, reviewing grammar, and going over the assessment test that the students must complete in their 8th grade year. Friday consisted of taking two exams, one vocabulary test and the assessment itself. This assessment task asked for students to read "Paul…

Walking to work

I’ve been using classroom Walk-Throughs for the past 7 months in order to get to get into the classrooms in my school, get to know what the teachers are doing, familiarize myself with the curricula in the

various grades and just acquaint myself with how this form of

supervision might work for me.

Now, I started with the book The Three-Minute Classroom Walk-Through by Corlyn J. Downey. Like most administrators, I read through the book, worked through the different…

Web 2.0 and the hurdles we face.

My experience with Classroom 2.0 as tool for learning and professional development has been a good one. I have been using it with my classes in conjunction with Blackboard (a LMS) for several weeks. The beauty of Classroom 2.0 thus far, is that it has provided my masters students with a collaborative environment to discuss with peers the pedagogical…

A Tale of Two Activities

Tale 1

I attended what I thought was going to be an informal gathering of tech types (teachers, animation artists, web developers, small tech business owners) and was astounded to see every presenter pull out their computer and do a formal presentation for 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes of questions. The audience passively conformed, rarely commenting, occasionally questioning. The meeting was held in a local bar back room just to add to how bizarre this is and people pulled the… Continue

My New wiki on Active Learning

I created a wiki on Active Learning with Technology for a seminar I was facilitating. There are some great video examples of elementary students using active technology. http://technologyactivelearning.pbwiki.com/

It's a wiki wonderland!

I like to use wikis for much of the work that I do. I think that they allow me a great deal of freedom to be creative in their construction without being overwhelming, give me just enough gadgets

and plug-ins to keep me busy and suit my purpose when it comes to

organization and access. Right now I use one for my planning, another I used with my class last year to gather information about Medieval Europe, a…

Collaborating on the Monster

OK - Pakistan signed up and I discovered that the teacher really likes doing digital video projects, so we're working on ways to incorporate a monster theme into kid-created videos with the Karachi kids - an offshoot of the main collaborative effort to build a friendly monster based on the descriptions of 20 or so elementary classrooms from around the globe - and be done by Halloween! Taiwan kids are emailing, Japanese kids sending drawings through the mail, even have a group of the "littlest… Continue
