21st Century Education is Happening: What does it look like?

The video posted on this page on 21st Century Learning suggests requirements that neither make all schools the same, nor require we drop everything we do. But it does suggest a framework for renewal. We need to:
  • Use a project/problem based curriculum and experiential learning
  • Have students address real world problems
  • Nurture and support creativity
  • Instill curiosity -- lifelong
  • See the arts as…

Radical Ideas at Work in Education: A Response

Today I was accused of being a 'lazy teacher'. Amused, bemused, I asked why. The response, "I walked past your classroom today and your students were just busy talking to one another and you weren't lecturing them. It looked like you were doing nothing." I felt rather thrilled at the characterization.…

New to this thing!

Ok, I am officially trying to develop my own PLN. I have gone back and forth for the last year debating whether it was worth it to join twitter and jump with both feet into the whole thing. I know find that it is well worth the time and energy that it takes to get started. The benefit is what counts. I have learned so much from the people that I follow on twitter and the blogs that I follow through my email. I don't have to go to conferences to find information on specific topics like we used… Continue

ipad ideas

I really want to begin exploring the possible uses in the classroom for then new ipad. I pitched the idea to a central administration person in my district who has a little money for ideas like this. He countered by saying he needs something a little more concrete, than my original idea of "playing."…

The Usual Suspects

This is a strange post to be putting up in a ning with so many members.

In my own locale, Greece, the number of educators who engage in dialogue with other educators aroung the globe is really far too small for comfort.

And yet, this may be true in the smaller local settings in which each one of you find yourselves; I read comments like this often enough on twitter and educators' blogs to know that it is not only a local…

Social networks in class

Hi, I'm Valeria and I'm new here.
I'm an Italian student undertaking my MA in Education at the University of Warwick (UK). I'm currently working on my final dissertation about the use of social networks in the language classroom and I'm looking for someone who has already used or is using them.
I hope someone can help me.

Jeopardy Game...

This one is an old one but a great one. I use Jeopardy Powerpoint in my classroom all the time. It's really simple and great for a review. I put students into pairs and ask them to play against each other keeping score. Then I email the Jeopardy game to them. Or you can play it as a classroom with you running the program and splitting the class.

The one I attached I used in my classroom after doing a unit on Emailing. I had prizes (candies) for the winners. Kids loved it and the… Continue

On a roll - Prezi....

I've been teaching Prezi, the presentation software to my students in Grades 8 - 12. I have also been teaching it to my fellow colleagues. And this is what I've been handing out to them to help them get started. The presentation program is fun, excellent for concept mapping as well as just plain image mapping. Students have the ability to put an order to their thoughts at the end of the presentation instead of worrying about what should come next after each slide on the slide show. This lets… Continue
