A Classroom’s Hierarchy Of Needs I just got home after a morning of observing two classrooms. One was wonderful, a place that all students would long to be in. One was dreadful, a place that students would only just barely tolerate and where one student actually said, when asked to make a metaphor using the word school, “School is jail”.
What made them different? On the face of it they were both…

I'm still trying to explore ways in which web 2.0 tools can be used to mentor students. A new thought would be to have small groups that are assigned to a mentor who monitors the discussion. Norms would be developed within the group as part of a first lesson. Students (and adults) need guidance in using social networking tools so we would begin with a lesson on digital citizenship and discuss things like checking in once a day instead of being "on" constantly. There would also be limits on…

So in looking at this class (and other social media outlefts) available, some of them I think would be hard to use in the classroom.
I think Twitter could be a fun, useful site, at the same time hard to control. Even for this class, I personally found it hard to use Twitter as something other than a social escape. In talking with Paco, we decided it was possible, for example, the way Drew uses Twitter- for talking with people about educational things. But since I started using…

Drew asked us to write a blog about the book or any other topic...
So here's my thought on some aspects that the book brings up.
Technology.
I guess I am just someone who has grown up with technology. I use it all the time, want the newest gadgets and have no problems picking up something and playing with the numerous small buttons on it. So in reading the first few chapters, it really opened my eyes to how technology has rocked the small things we do.
Looking at…

We took our free trial Tegrity account out for a ‘test drive’ the other day. We like it.
This is a follow up post to the series I ran here in February and March, in which I learned about some of today’s Lecture Capture systems, and selected a product to test. My goal was to find a proven tool that allowed for easy and affordable…

I am interested in develop a way to mentor students using technology. Kids seem to love texting and posting on their facebook. How can this be used by teachers to help mentor students? Teachers in the news often get in trouble for communicating with students using technology but there must be a way to utilize technology in a meaningful way to mentor students.
One idea I have is that students and teachers could use a discussion tab on a wiki for communication about a very specific…

Over spring break, I learned how to create a Google website. It was fairly easy. I wanted a place to leave resources for teachers that are learning how to use technology in their classrooms. I will add more resources to this site as I have time. Here is the link: http://sites.google.com/site/uteachwithtechnology/home

In the last few days I've been test
driving the new Apple iPad and I have a few thoughts about it as a
product and an experience. In the interest of full disclosure, I'll
admit upfront to being an Apple fan of many years. I've had an iPhone
for some time and have marked well it's strengths and weaknesses as a
phone and a computer and I find that the iPad with wifi delivers an
experience not unlike that of the iPhone. The major ah ha… Continue

I am a high school English teacher located in southern Illinois. I work in a very rural school. How rural, you ask? It is surrounded on all four sides by cornfield. That said, I love my job and I work with a great group of kids!
Currently, I have quite a bit of technology in my classroom: a Smart Board, a projector, a scanner, a Flip video camcorder, a digital camera, and a few other bells and whistles. Like a lot of teachers out there, I also spend quite a bit of my own money on my…
