One day at school, the children in class began to identify the flavors of Life Savers by each of their colors:
Red.....................Cherry
Yellow.................Lemon
Green...................Lime
Orange ..............Orange
Finally the teacher gave them all HONEY lifesavers. None
of the children could identify the taste.
The teacher said, 'I will give you all a clue. It's what your
mother may sometimes call your…

TEACHING TECHNIQUES-TEACH THE BRAIN, NOT THE STUDENT I am an enthusiastic teacher that believes every student is capable of great success. I have two great friends and one soon to be great friend that cautions my enthusiasm, their contention is that the teacher’s ability may be good or even great, but we must place more accountability on the student. I agree.
When I do "how to learn" presentations for students, I tell them they can learn regardless of how negative or… Continue

I teach middle school PE and, as most of you know, PE teachers spend most of their days away from their offices and thus, desks. Today, my PE cohort and I were talking about ways to make OUR lives easier in our outdoor classroom. We began discussing what we might be able to do with the new Apple iPad. We use an online grading system called Schoolloop. We would be able to access that instantly, without having to write notes in a grade book and then transfer it online. We could show demonstration…

Over the past five years, the response of most school administrators to social networking sites– YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, etc.– is simply to restrict access on campus. In a recent piece in Slate, Nicholas Bramble argues it’s time to open access to these sites.

Last weekend I took my daughter to LACMA (the Los Angeles County Museum of Art). I hadn't been in a decade and WOW, was I blown away by the incredible experience.
LACMA is a really good museum. And I like really good museums. Why I haven't been in more than 10 years, I have no idea.
Anyway, LACMA lured us to their museum with an offer of free art for kids. (My daughter's 3 1/2 so what a great way to spend a Sunday, right?) Of course, it was…

Almost all the students’ loves holidays and vacations. Asking me - why? Well, of course we get tired of projects, school papers and homeworks. Plus stressful pop quizzes and recitations as well as quarterly exams. That’s why how can we not love the spring breaks?
We aren't too far away from Spring Break for college kids, and then Memorial Day isn't too long after that. Then you got Fourth of July, and these are all popular times to go camping. (Don't forget Labor Day.) If you really…

I can delete albums but not photos, why is that?
Just got tired of looking at my old photos, and want to remove these. I'm now teaching at a Mac school where every classroom has a Smartboard. I want to post photos about these, without cluttering my space with too much photos.

Something is up with one of my students. In the last 2 weeks, it seems like her personality has just done a complete 180.
She used to be very sweet and get along with everyone in class. But in the last 2 weeks she's become very irritable, stubborn, and even has huge bursts of intense anger. She tattles on every little thing and has even been caught lying about many of the things of which she tattles. She's started picking fights with children she claims are her best…

I am kicking around a new book idea about the need for single-tasking in a world where people sing the praises a bit too loudly about the ability to multi-task.
(But since I kick around new book ideas all the time, it's probably best just to blog about it and see if the itch is still there to scratch at the end of this post.)
Multi-taking, in the modern world, is something we all do. Talking on the phone while googling an address as someone speaks to you from the…

Make EDUCATION better! HOW?
I would like for all teachers to think about this. If the school system you work for tripled your salary
Want would you different in the classroom?
My guess is that you are already doing all that you know how to do.
More money spent on teacher salaries would not make teachers currently employed any better.
If teacher salaries were tripled, MAYBE more people would be attracted to the… Continue

Hi, Thanks to Jane for inviting me. My name is Dean Groom and I work at Macquarie University in Sydney Australia. My job is to teach largely non-teachers -- how to teach, and in doing that, look for methods and ways that help them transition from the learning by absorption we see in traditional classrooms to more enquiry methods.
Enter PBL. I trained with New Tech High - and since then my interest is how to rip out tools like Microsoft Office, IWBs and projectors - and get kids to…

I have taken quite a few learning style and personality tests in my college experience. The MII, Multiple Intelligence Inventory, produced results that were both expected and surprising. At the top of my list was Music (45) with Interpersonal not too far behind. Though I really enjoy music, especially playing the piano, I would have guessed Interpersonal or Body/Kinesthetic to have been the first. The MII pointed to my hands-on learning style, which is completely accurate. In order for me to be…

Hey, all,
I had the opportunity to view the pre-broadcast version of the fantastic years-in-the-making PBS "Digital Nation" program yesterday and I'm doing all I can to get folks to view and to contribute to what will undoubtedly be a rousing discussion of its implications for those of us who have "drunk the koolaid" as innovators and advocates in the field of educational technology.
Carry on discussion here or visit…

Look, let's be honest for a minute. If you have been reading me for any length of time at all you have probably noticed that the past wee bit has seen a more cynical, jaded bite -- a sharpened, more cutting blog-edge tone, if you will.
I admit it. I've darkened.
But the thing is, well... there are a few things. For one, if we are going to be really honest, this freakin' job is freakin' hard. And between the budget cuts and the bastards and the buffoons, it would…

I took the MI Inventory and received interesting results. My ID number was 709986. You can view my results by entering my ID number
here. It was interesting to have this kind of self evaluation. After taking the test, I realized I am lacking in the area of "Mathematics" which was surprising. I did very well in school every year, and enjoyed math. It seemed a lot of…

I am a teacher at a middle school. This is my second year of teaching a class of 8th grade struggling readers. I realize that I will probably be their last reading teacher. They will be on their own next year in high school. I am wanting to learn as much as possible about using cues, questions, and advance organizers so I can be as effective as possible for these students. All are bright, very capable students, just somewhere along the way reading became an impossibility for them. Does anyone…
