I adore "The 2 Sisters" Gail Boushey & Joan Moser of
The Daily Five and the
CAFE Book fame. (If you're not sure, ask an ELEMENTARY teacher--they'll fill you in!) This morning, in my Inbox, I was excited to see their "
Tip of the Week" from their site
http://www.thedailycafe.com. This week they were remembering something Regie Routman had once said at a…

I am a principal who wants to move to one to one. I am leaning toward the IPod touch or IPad for this. Can anyone give me some suggestions? I want something that students can own and take home with them and then use at school. I would really appreciate any suggestions you may have on this subject.

For many years teachers and researchers have been studying the complex problem of understanding student misbehavior in school. There is an increasing body of evidence (*Solomon & Solomon, 2008) that suggests a student’s disruptive behavior is related to three key classroom variables or conditions:
1. The negative thoughts and feelings that dwell within the student. (e.g. I’m having a miserable day, and I’m going to make certain that everyone else in class has a miserable day as…

If I was going to craft a list of the top 10 books of the 20th century in our nation's English classes, the ones that have most shaped, informed, been taught, and so on, I have a feeling
The Catcher in the Rye would make the list.
Today we note that the author of that work, J.D. Salinger, passed away yesterday at the age of 91.
I always really liked the fact that Salinger was a so-called "recluse". Especially since in this day and age, the rush for media…

Alright, here's an interesting thought in the wake of the roll out of the iPad. When we are discussing a design of any kind, we are talking about a design of a full experience. Any product cannot be thought of merely as a product. All products provide some type of service. The user experience with the product, ie the production of the service, is merely the centerpiece of the overall experience with the product. That experience begins with the user first hearing of it and extends through the…

If schools are going to use technology to improve organizational processes, it’s important their leaders consider moving many of the school’s daily operations onto a cloud-based network.

Today my principal called me in to ask if I'd be interested in serving on a committee chaired by our superintendent. The committee will be making recommendations about opening up our district to using (and allowing students to use) more technology and social networking at school. From the way it was described to me, it seems as though the main focus will be social networking. Anyway, I'm going to do some research prior to the first meeting. I'd like to go in with research, anecdotes, lesson…

I don’t know about you, but I am the type of person that likes to get things quickly and not spend a lot of time debating or arguing. Case in point, whenever I go shopping I tend to buy things quickly with the goal of getting out of the store as soon as possible. This usually results in my forgetting to purchase a few items or my buying something which is overpriced or doesn’t fit right.
I have realized, the hard way, that whenever I spend a few moments and make a list of things I…

Found my way to a talk at the
Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard on Monday by Jeremy Bailenson. Bailenson runs the
Virtual Human Interaction Lab at Stanford and they explore the implications of human interactions through avatars, among other things.
Bailenson was talking about avatars, a hot topic right now, for sure. His basic point was that avatar…

Tech managers from around the globe chime in for VCR phase-out survey at AV-1.org.
130 respondents offered a few surprises...
79% of us still have VCRs in up to 75% of our rooms. (Doesn't that seem like quite a lot of VCRs still in service?)
Only 34% of us have any sort of plan in place to end-of-life VCRs. (An artifact of fiscal hard-times or evidence of a…

After taking the MII, I learned a few things about my learning style that I didn't know and did not expect to be reflected in the results. My complete results can be seen below. I thought that the MII would reveal that I am more of an Intrapersonal learner rather than an Interpersonal learner, come to find out, I have the same percentage score on both. I also thought that my Mathematics percentage would greatly out way that of the Linguistics, but in comparison they were much closer, with 32 in…

A Three-Dimensional Model for Understanding Student Disruptive Behavior: Part Three, The Interpersonal Approach*
The interpersonal approach, the third dimension to understanding student disruptive behavior suggests that many youngsters naturally acquire anti-social and irresponsible behavior through rewarded peer socialization. Many of these youngsters do not have positive role models in their daily life to imitate. Therefore, the interpersonal approach advocates that…

Does it happen to everyone in education that they lose touch at some point, like an athlete that doesn't know when to hang it up, and they hold on for too long... to the detriment of those they have been hired to serve?
Thing about this issue though is that age, oftentimes, has very little to do with the matter of when someone should hang up their educational spurs. Truly, some people ought to take their chips off the table after but 3 months in this profession -- and for a…

I have taken things like the MII before, in fact I have taken the MII. They are neat tests because it's neat to see the results. It's neat to somewhat see what I'm like, what I enjoy doing, etc. Although it is good to see those things, I have trouble seeing how effective they are. I mean, how much do they help? How much good do they do? Maybe for some people they work, but for me, they don't do a lot for me, even though as I said it is interesting to see my results.…

After completing the
MI Inventory, the only thing I know for sure is that I have changed quite a bit since my senior year of high school. My highest category was Interpersonal, which I found to be odd. Most people who meet me think that I'm quiet (at least, that's what they think at first). I used to think that people who said that we're crazy, and then as…

Just wanted to let you know that it IS possible to make pretzels at home from SCRATCH. We had our FIFTH,
(yep, count 'em: 1, 2, 3, 4, FIVE), snow day of the year (and it's only January) and I finally mustered up the nerve to try that
recipe from food network that had been hanging on my frig for months. For my first attempt at something with YEAST and completely…
