Reading the book...

So I started reading the Shirky book this week - it's an easy read and I like it so far!

I think that one of the things that holds me back from being an active participant in social networking is the feeling of responsibility to continue to be engaged. For example, I almost didn't make this post because spring break is starting after 3 pm tomorrow (yes!). I know I won't be able to respond for the next week or so to any replies that are left here (my family will kill me if I'm too…

First Impressions

After reading and listening to the information posted about PLN's, one word remains with me. BALANCE. Yes, that's the word for me. I currently have four e-mail accounts, along with accounts on Facebook, Twitter, SKYPE, a ning or two, follow a few blogs, etc. I even had a blog of my own for awhile, a teacher blog of sorts. I work on various computers (four actually) and a Blackberry, have numerous flash drives with various bits and bytes of information, and have programmed three ipods.…

Kindling Interest in the iPad

Our school uses the Blackboard CE Learning Management System, and my online philosophy courses are heavily dependent on threaded discussions.

Rather than stare at a computer screen all day, I've taken to compiling all the discussion comments, pasting them into a Word document, then sending the document to my Kindle. In a few seconds I have the complete discussion, and I can add notes and grades from my easy chair. The e-Ink screen is easy on the eyes, too.

When I'm finished,… Continue

Kidspiration

With Kidspiration, there are many different ways it can be used in the classroom. With the assignment we had to do, it was very easy to make a web of our friends and family. And then when put in writing mode, it was very easy to write a description of the person we were talking about. The program is very user friendly and that's probably because it's made for children. I really like the fact that you can ad pictures with words so younger kids can associate that the picture and the word go… Continue

Kidspiration

Last week in Educational Technology we learned about various different programs that we may one day use in our own classrooms. One of the programs, "Kidspiration", helps students brainstorm by creating their own customized webs and outlines. For today's assignment, we were to create a web that contains at least 5 family members and 5 friends. We identified each person with either a picture or one of the symbols provided on Kidspiration. After creating the web, we wrote an outline of the web…

Kidspiration

This past week in Ed. Tech we got to work with various kinds of children’s computer software programs. It was definitely my favorite class so far! One of the types of software programswe got to work with was Kidspiration. DIY Lifecycle Planning

Ernie Adams (no relation to Ernie Bailey) as Toothpick Charlie (purveyor of another type of "lifecycle business"), from BRENDA STARR, REPORTER (Columbia, 1945)... click here to read intro at AV-1.insider

It starts like this:

There was a monastery in Greece that was built on top of a very steep precipice. The only access was by a basket on a long rope, pulled by a monk on top. A visitor riding up to the top looked at the aged rope and asked his host how often the rope was replaced. The monk thought a moment…

Kidspiration

Kidspiration (preview by clicking here!) is a tool tha can be used to make brain webs on a computer. It is great for children who cannot read because Kidspiration can have sound and verbally tell a child what a picture or word is supposed to mean. After playing with Kidspiration, I realized how beneficial it could be to lower end elementary school kids as well as upper elementary students. A teacher of lower elementary children could use…
