Yesterday, we had our first parent-teacher interviews for the current academic year. Some of my colleagues don’t like them. I do.
I enjoy parent-teacher interviews because I always see them as an opportunity to reflect on what I’ve accomplished with each individual child. Getting ready for parent-teacher interviews is an opportunity
for reflection and self-assessment. It’s an…

I just got home from a few days in Colby kansas. I always love visiting the schools and educators in this unique city and am energized by the conversations that I get to have. They call me out to be a part of an ideation process a few times a year and it is usually an intense process. This district employs people in leadership that really work hard to bring new tools to their learners and empower them to be successful.
The first thing you notice about Colby is that the town is West,…

I was a little lost - had just enough ideas and information to know roughly were I wanted to go, but not the best route to get there. First I blogged it on my own
blog, then I went looking for answers. I found similar questions and GREAT resources/answers right here at the Classroom 2.0 ning. The ability to search by tool, subject or area made this viable. While I still hope I get additional input via my blog post, I am already running with some key…

I'm really feeling a lot of success with my 1st year French class
wiki. There is growing evidence that they use the links and videos to do their homework. Students talk about the videos, and one student even sent me a new video link to add. My latest coup in bringing kids to web 2.0 technology has been with comic strip generators. I am so pleased with the positive response I've gotten from kids with comic strip generators that I'm on the lookout for new…

I've been spending time this week with Kevin Honey . . . cutt and yes we've laughed, cried and learned much. I've come up with this prose to summarize my learning this week.
Google Sketch-Up where you can mock up
I've certainly caught on to the computer hold up
We can make movies with our green screen set up
My kids have enjoyed seeing Kevin crack up
Art Snacks really had the kids keyed up

Today was a lot of fun. In the BIology classes, students took a quiz on the parts of cells and how they function. The quiz was conducted using individual response devices. (I use a set from TurningPoint http://www.turningtechnologies.com and am very pleased with them.) It was great to see how many students really comprehended the material. They enjoyed taking the quiz and asked when they could take the next quiz "Using clickers again!"
My 7th grade students also used the…

According to
Robert Evans, the author of The Human Side of School Change,
this is an essential question that all leaders must ask themselves. He
also suggests that a motto is much more effective than a lengthy
mission statement or a long list of goals or values. I've been thinking
about this a lot lately, trying to…

In my pursuit of active learning examples I discovered four very innovative programs from Roger Shank that I wanted to share with you:
1. Scientific Reasoning Curriculum
The Scientific Reasoning Curriculum, the first in the VISTA four-year program, lays the groundwork for scientific thinking by presenting students with a series of challenges that require students to address problems with a systematic, scientific approach. In each project,…

This video is a wonderful look at Sir Ken Robinson, a visionary who sees children as I see them - only he was clever enough to express it in public!

I’ve been in a discussion over at Infinite Thinking Machine with various people including Arthus who is “… a 14-year-old student in Vermont who has recently become actively involved in the online dialog
about educational technology.”
Part of the discussion I’ve been having with Arthus and Steve Hargadon, of Ning…

I just found this site in the last 2 weeks. After reading through a few of the discussions and groups I thought it a good idea to join and try to become more involved with the groups here.
I'll be most interested in seeing what other k-8 teachers are doing with students as far as "tech" is considered. I'm in an all Macintosh environment (much to the chagrin of our district's heirarchy!) so will be looking for ideas and apps that work on OSX PowerPC machines.
I support about 100 iBooks…

Two of the three science teachers at my school decided to apply for the e-MINTS grant provided by our District. There were about 160 applicants. 60 grants were awarded. We were excited to participate in the first training today. Each person in our training group is excited to be a part of this program. We enjoyed the introduction into how and why collaborative groups are so important in the success of students in secondary schools. We also agreed that these same students will understand the…

Many people are interested in Web sites such as news sites, community and religious organization information pages, product information pages, medical websites, and weblogs whose content changes on an unpredictable schedule. Repeatedly checking each Web site to see if there is any new content can be very tedious. Before RSS Feeds were available, users would have to go to each page, load it, remember how it is formatted, and find where they last left off in…

Today I have so much work to get done so I will just give a list of things that I did today:
- Shadowed a female student and was very impressed with the classes she was taking. It ranged from jewerely design to treble choir to precalculus to advanced painting and drawing. I have seen two different math teachers and two different economic teachers. It is interesting to see the variety of teaching skills among the teachers
- I sat in and observed the second day of the…
