The Marketplace
For the last number of years educator's have been turning to wiki platforms to create collaborative spaces. The ease of use, access, and availability of wikis have made them a favourite option for teacher's hoping to create an online space to share with their students. But Google has quickly become an increasingly popular choice for use among educators, especially for district-wide implementation - a corporate,…

I remember when I started teaching and my third grade team told me that our kids practice keyboarding in computer, I was amazed. I guess I hadn't thought about kids learning to type that young because I was not taught keyboarding until high school. Then it dawned on me that of course they need to be able to type early on in this day and age. The different activities we complete and educational websites we visit in class are so much more effective than when I was in school. I know our advanced…

After reading the first three chapters in our book, "Here Comes Everybody," it left me with a few thoughts to ponder. One point that intrigued me was reading about how professionals of any kind are valuable during ordinary times, but become invaluable during revolutionary times (p. 69) because professionals are always concerned with threats to the profession. The book discussed scribes vs. the printing press. I had never really contemplated that the technology of the printing press completely…

I recently posted about a classroom teacher's story about barriers to technology integration in her history class, a "classroom for the future"
http://bit.ly/9HMf9Y From my post, you can link directly to the teacher's M.Ed. thesis, which provides a good first-person insight about the barriers she faced in her attempts to effectively integrate a rich assortment of technology in her classroom.
Here is just one the examples from the…

After a brief conversation yesterday with my Mentor Teacher (MT), I discovered the purpose of my teaching career. Granted, teaching kids is always the reason teachers get out of bed each morning, but there has to be some over-arching drive to anyone's professional career. Film makers want an Oscar, music artists want a Grammy, executives want to become CEOs, but what do teachers want? The education system is too flawed to be content… Continue

The MACUL, Michigan Association for Computers Use in Learning, took place in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 10-12, 2010. It was the first conference that I had attended that was for teachers who use computers to further the learning of their students. It was great. For this week's assignment in Educational Technology, I had to make a character posters using Microsoft Office's Excel program. My character poster included a picture of me as the background and a word that describes me along with its definition - both displayed somewhere on the poster.
To make the poster on Excel, I zoomed out to view the page at 25%, so that I was able to see the page lines (the…
