My district is trying to make a big commitment to involve students, parents, teachers and administrators in the SpeakUp survey (
http://www.speakup4schools.org/speakup2009). We are hoping that this opportunity to provide feedback yields information that we can sink our teeth into, and give us some consumer-based measure of where we need to go with technology. If you haven't looked into this survey, please do. If you've had experience with…

The final post in a series that examines tools for students to create and host e-portfolios for little or no cost.
Over the last two weeks, I researched
free options for creating and hosting e-portfolios for college students, to help with job search efforts. I settled on Google Sites as a great option for laying out a site to display text,…

Some days I am a madman. I can crank out 2,200 pretty-close-to-publishable-words in a day's work and then come right back and do another 2,200 the next day. (Usually in the summer when I am off from teaching.) Without a doubt, when I am in the midst of a novel and it is rolling, let me tell you, it can get rolling!!
And then there are the days when I know that to be a real writer, you gotta trudge through the sludge.
I actually happen to be in that exact phase…

I've been at the WCET conference this week learning about online learning. Turns out, a lot of the sessions have been about Web 2.0 tools. Teachers across the country are finding hundreds of new tools that make it easier to communicate with students and to facilitate collaboration in their classrooms. This has raised many questions about what it means to be literate in today's 21st century environment and what is means to be information fluent. According to Chris Lott and Carol Gering of…

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to record Skype video calls and, if so, how to do it? I see that audio calls are now easily recorded, but when I attampted to record a short video call (both of us were using video), only the audio recorded.

So I gotta hand it to Arne Duncan cause the man is not afraid to use pointed words and ruffle some feathers. His latest spear is aimed at teacher training programs. (BTW, I do not say "spears" in a condescending manner because when you look at the state of education today, you gotta admit, we need some "new stuff" and unless you are willing to break some eggs you're not going to be able to make a new educational omelet -- so a part of me salutes Arne Duncan in a BIG Ol' WAY simply for…

How does everyone use the IPOD Touch with students? Or what are things you have heard other teachers using? I know they can be used for podcasting, but there has to be other uses! Thank you to all for sharing their ideas!

We are currently in the process of putting together an Edusim advisory group who will direct content development and design decision as we prepare to release the Edusim Beta 01 distribution of Cobalt mid 2010.
This group will meet twice a month virtually - initially via Adobe Connect, then as the Cobalt environment matures within a Cobalt environment.
The groups goals will be to:

So how did I become a published author? I think the first answer I'd offer is, "mathematically".
Here's how I do it nowadays.
I am a full time high school teacher. This means I am up really early and am perpetually over-worked by the demands I face at school. But still, as we all know, so, so many teachers have 2nd jobs to make ends meet. I am no different. My school salary is not nearly enough to meet the financial demands of modern day life -- especially in…

I recently had this article published on Ezines and I thought that I would post it here, as well. (I've developed a Google Earth unit in which students compare The Great Gatsby to the Roaring Twenties. To see more about it go to:
http://www.pass-ed.com/GatsbyoftheTwenties.html.
Do you remember reading the Great Gatsby in high school? How much of the book do you remember? If you are anything like me you…

I recently published an Ezine article entitled "Google Earth Lessons: Using Google Earth Layers." I thought that I would repost it here.
Have you used Google Earth to promote the highest quality teaching and learning within your classroom? Have you challenged your students to use G.E. to answer innovative and insightful questions? If not, I believe that you are missing an important and free learning tool.
At first glance, G.E. is obviously about geography. But, it is good…

I am not a fan of the whole idea of "tolerance". I mean, I get the spirit of the campaign but as an English teacher and as a writer, I am just not a fan of the word choice at all.
To me, to "tolerate" someone connotes that I should endure them. That I should "bear" them. That I should recognize that I am superior to that person but, for the sake of not creating conflict, I should shut my trap, bite my tongue and suffer the shortcomings of this person's inferiority and…

I recently learned how to make a large poster with nothing but Microsoft Excel and a picture file. This completely blew my mind. The only things I had ever used Excel for before this was accounting homework and plugging in formulas for physics homework. I had no idea a program like Excel could be used for anything but numbers. Then i started thinking about it. "What other programs have stretched to fit my needs?" And i realized that with enough imagination, one could accomplish so much more by…

About two weeks ago I posted an article on
