Think-Pair-Share (Lyman, 1981): An Equity Pedagogical Best Practice to Increase and Vary Student Participation in the Classroom
This is a three-step paired cooperative procedure created by *Dr. Frank Lyman in 1981. During step one, each member individually and silently thinks about a question posed by the teacher. During the second step, two members are paired to exchange and discuss their responses. During step three, each member may share his response, his partner's response, a…

Before we define equity pedagogy, let’s share some relevant research.
There have been a number of important studies which indicate that a teacher's perceptions of students can influence their teaching. In 1968, * Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson published a famous study, Pygmalion in the Classroom, which had profound effects upon the practice of teaching. In their study, they provided teachers in an elementary school with undocumented information about several students in their…

I just witnessed a group of teens and young adults who said, with a straight face and all the seriousness in their heart that they could muster, that if they did not figure out a way to improve over their performance of last year, they'd be toast. They knew they needed to grow, adapt, change, evolve and break new ground... for if they didn't, they knew someone else, with more hunger in the belly, would come along and take from them their, well... everything. Their future, their…

Pictures are very powerful and when used with language and writing, work to activate both the right and left sides of the brain for a whole learning experience.

Working on my listening skills has probably been one of the best pieces of PD advice I have ever tried to take to heart.
The fact is, we teachers, we kinda come to class to talk. To impart. To flow outwardly. And in the chaos that is a teaching day, with hundreds of students coming at you from hundreds of angles at a hundred miles an hour seeking hundreds of answers (from "May I go to the bathroom?" to "Do you think Shakespeare really wrote all those plays?" to "Can I bring…

Currently I sifted through the blog discussions and links on this site. It was a little overwhelming, but if I do blogs, it looks like there will be plenty of info and organization. I caught up on the the Beginner 2.0 wiki series with Eluminate and took 3 pages of notes. Wikis are a lot like webpages. They remind me of the editing and proofreading website I made:http://sites.google.com/site/editinghelpsite/ which has the same setup. I talked to our tech teacher at school and neither are being…

Here goes! This is my first attempt at blogging.
Background first. I have been teaching since 1991. At Easter in 1998 I got the opportunity to come out of the classroom and work with the parents in my area. So for more than 10 years that's what I have been doing and I loved it. Unfortunately, due to the economic downturn, that position has been taken from my schools and I am going back to the classroom.
In Sept I will be teaching 11/12 year olds. Initially I hated the idea but now I…

TIME magazine just published
this story called Morning the Death of Handwriting. It made me realize that the more deeply I think about my job as a teacher, the more acutley aware I become that I really can't say for sure that I am doing the right thing -- or teaching the right things -- in my classroom.
Sure, my state has standards -- and our nation is currently developing…

With the emergence of
social media technology in the classroom, teachers are finding innovative ways to promote student learning. As educators become more sophisticated in terms of utilizing Internet and mobile-based technologies to share information, they are taking advantage of new and exciting opportunities to improve their teaching practice. One particular area of interest to me is the way in which this sort of…

I am wondering what Web 2.0 tools can be integrated into the theatre classroom. This summer I have been working on teaching for film materials. Film acting teaching and film studies teaching seems to be a natural integration of Web 2.0! But what about theatre? It is sad that an art which is so collaborative can be seem to fit into this collaboration web world!
I developed a Comedy Writing Project that could be used in the theatre classroom, but it is really more of a film project.…
