I recently came across a really good post by Steve Dembo (Teach42) titled: My cell phone can beat up your laptop." It's a great write-up about his most recent cell phone (no plug for the Nokia N95) and the many applications for both teachers and students. In the process, he explores the many many applications for cell phones in the classroom. I was fascinated by the brief… Continue

We all get exasperated with our students sometimes and that's what led me to buy a new book. My latest blog entry reflects on the book and the importance of understanding the generation of students we have in our classrooms - "What happens when X, Y, and Z collide?"

Everyone likes to find a terrific Web 2.0 tool or piece of free software that makes our digital lives easier. Often these little gems aren’t earth-shaking discoveries – they just make…
A local organization offered grant opportunities for students interested in community service projects. My students completely surprised me with their interest in building park benches to replace broken ones near a local lake. And guess what, they were awarded funds to complete their project. I'm so proud of them.

I'm growing increasingly frustrated with the entering freshman classes here at my university. The lack of respect, the lack of courtesy, the presumption that they own ALL of my time, not taking responsibility for their own education, not writing down assignments, continually asking what's due when, asking what did they miss when they were gone...
I love the transformation that occurs during the 1st year of college. I enjoy being part of that process, and since I am a younger… Continue
As I gear up for the last push of the 2008 school year I logged on this afternoon and had some of my reservations about the cyberdrama project alleviated. To check out how my students motivate me to keep going see my latest blog entry "On Your Marks..."

In the quest to save time and not having to deal with crowds, we often resort to home shopping networks or online shopping. As the holidays approach, here are a few you may want to pass on this year.…
I believe that the aspect of including social media and social elements in your school, work, or play is important and that it is still all the "buzz." But, is using the words "social" or "social network" out? Facebook has a made a few minor changes, notably, they have removed the social network definition in their description. Maybe it's just a given or maybe it's just out. It reminds me of the days when everyone went through the whole... "we're a .com… Continue

We just wrapped up a two week unit on exactly what it means when the teacher says, "You have to read nonfiction differently." Kiddos at my school have HEARD that phrase before, but many could not really explain exactly what that meant. So on Friday, as an assessment, I had them write out answers to these three essential questions which we had discussed… Continue
If there is a area in education that is more murky I am unaware of any. There is so much conflicting information on what educators may and may not use for classroom instruction ,that most of us end up hopelessly lost reading the small print. So after reading everything I could find on the subject I am going to take a stab at figuring it out. Since I am not a lawyer ,just a humble educator , I always hope that the effort I put into citing sources counts. So here is my best… Continue
About 1.5 weeks ago I rolled out my class blog (Mr. Lane's Computer Applications/Web 2.0 Blog) as an interactive tool with my 8th grade Web 2.0 technology class (the first few weeks it served, more or less, as a Web 1.0 tool). After working through the layout of the blog, we read together a post, and then I asked them to submit a comment. Before they commented I spent some time discussing the importance of making sure the comment was free of spelling… Continue
