In college, we were taught all about Marzano and Bloom. I have to admit that I had a difficult time understanding the value behind these strategies because they were a more abstract concept coming out of a college textbook. I am sure many teachers can agree with me in that what we learned in our college courses had little to no bearing on what we do as teachers today, or at least as far as we are aware. For many of us, the practice of teaching has made us the teachers that we are…

Bloom’s taxonomy and Marzano’s Strategies are two concepts that I have been exposed to since very early on in my education classes almost eight years ago. At first they seemed very abstract and empty ideas to me for the simple reason I didn’t have any tools in my tool box, meaning I didn’t have any of my own lessons to mold and modify using these ideas. However, now that I am becoming a…

A lesson that I have taught that integrates the Revised Bloom’s and Digital Blooms is a lesson on figurative language and poetic devices. My students viewed a video from YouTube. The video consisted of different music video clips that portrayed examples of figurative language such as metaphors, similes, alliteration, personification, and imagery. The definitions of each of these poetic devices were given before the music video started playing. Throughout each video clip, the lyrics from the…

My younger brother called me the other day to ask if I knew how to create a Youtube channel so he could upload videos for the high school wrestling team he coaches. My reply- ask one of your students! I mean, I had to consult my husband’s eighth grade cousin for a tutorial on how to navigate the simplest functions on my i-Phone 4 (and apparently the “4” is, indeed, necessary as in a matter of mere months after purchase of said iPhone the newer, more advanced model had already moved on to…

I believe that the videos and the articles were spot on. The realm of education is shifting from paper/pencil to mouse/keyboard. I now know that I am a digital immigrant. I have some of the latest technology, such as an iPhone, but I don't really know how to use it to the fullest. I often find myself asking my students how to do things like download music. I feel that they teach me as much about technology as I teach them about Biology! I am in awe of the technological prowess of my…

Reflecting on the value of reflection.
I'm probably one of those who might've fallen into the trap of ridiculing refection as being all "touchy feely." The readings have certainly challenged this type of thinking.
For years I've had a belief in the value of reflection. Every so often in my devotional life--my walk with the Lord--I've started to keep journals, I've always felt this would be a "good practice" which would allow me to see growth, and revisit landmark experiences…

I feel that Marc Prensky’s article “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants” is very relatable and quite relevant to today’s educational system, but also relevant to the entire work force. Technology is growing at a rapid pace and for many older people it can be quite difficult to keep up and learn the new technology. Not only is it challenging to begin to learn, but it can be scary for those who are afraid of the unknown. Additionally, learning new technology can feel very similar to…

In "A Day in the Life of Web 2.0", there was a lot of activity taking place on the part of the students, parents, teachers, and administrators. I don't know that everyone could keep up with all of the podcasts mentioned in the article on a regular basis.
The statistics and ideas in the two videos didn't surprise me, as I had researched and used similar statistics for professional development presentations. I do believe we, as educators, need to systematically take a look at how we…

Where do I fall? I believe that I fall somewhere in the middle. I cannot completely claim one side or the other, though I am more native than immigrant. I grew up at the beginning stages of computers in schools, cell phones, and MP3 players. I am able to use the up and coming technology, but only at a beginning to intermediate level. I could not teach my students how to use technology, they would be teaching me! I have been surrounded by this technology for most of my life, but I have not…

When I first read the title of Prensky’s article, Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, I thought that I would be a digital immigrant because honestly, I don’t know much about technology beyond the computer. However, after reading the article and realizing what Prensky meant, I know that I am a digital native because I have grown up around technology and have used it since I started school. With that being said, like I mentioned before, I am not a technology guru and have a lot to…

Teaching in the Digital Age is exciting. Finding new ways to teach, connect, and help students grow is a challenge we, as educators, are starting to realize. Collaborating and networking are becoming essential skills for educators.
In the article, “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants” by Marc Prensky, I learned that I am a digital immigrant. I did not grow up immersed in technology. I do think, as an immigrant, I have been adapting pretty well. Immigrants are pretty accepting of…

The two videos that were shared were really meaningful to me because I had Professor Wesch as my Cultural Anthropology Professor at K-State. While my class wasn’t featured on the video, I knew many of the people that participated. I really recommend anyone that attends K-State to take a class from him. He really practices what he preaches in the video!
I am considered a “Digital Native.” However, I feel conflicted in this comparison. My teachers were all “Digital Immigrants” and I…
