Ten Ways Social Media Technology Will Change in 2010

Considering the growing role social media technology is playing in K-12 education, I found Ravit Lichtenberg’s blog 10 Ways Social Media Will Change in 2010 to be insightful. Most edtechies realize that 2009 was a pivotal year for social media technology and see its expanded use by everyday educators as a transformative development in K-12 education. MORE...

Cool Web 2.0 Tool - Sumo Paint

Image editors are rampant in the Web 2.0 world. While most of them are free, so many seem geared to really basic editing: crop, resize, and get-rid-of-red-eye. So, it's a thrill to run across a full-featured, robust online program that is simple enough for young students and sophisticated enough for graphics geeks. My benchmark for a superior graphics program is whether it supports layers. Layers are the key to subtle and complex graphic design imagery.… Continue

Goals: The Personal Before the Professional

As I mentioned the other day, I am a big believer in goals. So much so that I always write them down.

Yet often, when I think of goals, I think in terms of career and professional aspirations. In a way it seems as if this is the way I am wired. (As is the rest of America. We are all about "productivity". Buncha A-type personalities in the new land, that's for sure.)

So today I am going to begin with "personal" goals, the non-professional elements that make for a… Continue

Finding Balance or Being Centred – What’s the Difference?

Do you feel you are living a balanced life? Do you believe you have your priorities right? Is your work interfering with your life or is your life interfering with your work? During this last decade in particular much has been said and written, many courses devised and delivered, on how to achieve that apparently elusive vision of a work/life balance. Some believe they are being forced to work too much at the cost of their relationships with family and friends, while others consciously… Continue

Creating brief instructional videos (and more) with Jing

Cool free app for combining screen shots or screen motion with audio, to create instructional presentations.

This week I got my Jing on! I recently heard about Jing (found on the web at jingproject.com), and after a quick visit to their web site I knew that this might be the type of tool I’ve been thinking about trying out for creating some brief instructional videos. The fact that it was free made it a no brainer to go… Continue

My Journey In Education

Began in 1984-After the Birth of my first child- I became a director of an after school program and all day summer program in North Atlanta for school agers K-14.

With little experience or education- I created a curriculum based upon weekly summer themes. I scheduled educational field trips, guest speakers, and art projects to enhance the students cultural understanding and community awareness who attended the program.

During the school year, My after school program emphasized the… Continue

Wanted: Non-Accredited Online Education

We are all familiar with the endless myriad of online educational institutions, such as the University of Phoenix and DeVry. They offer diplomas for taking courses from the convenience of your home, at prices that are often competitive or comparable to traditional institutions. Even traditional schools are in the online education game today, with most offering extension schools to provide the flexibility of distance learning to their students.

But I’m not here to talk about… Continue
